Guys I'm a committed swing trader, however, I also 'scalp' and so...

I'm thinking of getting new kit with one of those 3/4 screen set ups, still undecided as to whether it's a bit w@nky and a bit unecessary but I quite fancy relaxing in my conservatory taking the scalps as tbh I'm finding it a bit exhausting doing it how I have been over the past few months, profitable but irritating...I've got a really good wi-fi speed at home from BT so that's not an issue, but I have a few questions if anyone could be kind enough to help...

I prefer Pro real time (given I can adjust the ticks as opposed to 1-5 min TFs) how easy is it to drag over 3 charts to each screen for each pair I scalp?

Second Q; 4gb or 8gb? Seeing plenty of boxes on E-bay brand new for between 300-800 quid, thoughts on what I should look for? Do the graphics cards differ that much? is an AMd quad core the dogs bo11ox, or Intel core with DD3? (whatever that is)

Also I want the kids to be able to use the new pc and screens if they want, although they've all got lap tops and the family pc so can I link the new set up to bt vision/freeview etc?

TIA, and if anyone thinks it's a bit unecessary then please let's know as I've always thought all these multi screen set ups a bit OTT tbh..

Depends really mate

You may want an execution screen, ie a screen to only place orders. On top of that you may want a screen devoted to 5min, and a screen with only 4hr,....3 screens?

Whatever suits you mate, you may want more, or you may want less.

I found PRT sufficient, nothing fancy but good enough to plot S&R and basic indicators.

Honestly, who needs "fancy"? How will/does one series of charts/indicators give an advantage over and above another when the game (my forex game) is all about price and how you act.. IMO it's (PRT) far better (for me) than meta trader or marketscope, particularly on the short term TFs given I don't trade off minute charts when scalping..But let's try and keep this on thread, simply looking for advice on set up of multi monitors/a more powerful pc to make my (scalping) life easier/more relaxed as I'm finding it straightforward and profitable, but sapping. With swing trading it's never mattered. I can get my local computer geek guy to offer up advice and he's a great guy, my bro in law could do it for me too but I would rather be fore-armed by folk with valuable imput/experience in what *we* do and then perhaps do the buying myself and ask for assistance in putting the kit together..

Scalping off 'technicals' can be done off one screen, but in general it's done off the DOM for one market. You'd probably be looking at using XTrader as a basic.

ladders, order book (another life time of learning) ...only got my head around level 2 (kinda) this year.. Just wanna keep it simple bud..only a simple retail punter flying low under the radar...

You may want to try cfds, if you are not already. Basically anything except SB firms, as a scalper, you are seen as a liability.

Apply what you know in a different way, you don't need to ask us fools.

How many screens do you think that you need? I use three. This is purely based on reducing flicking between screens, so i use my two main TFs, big and small, and an order screen which can be the DOM (just for orders), but it can be another type of order screen.

I've been scalping* 3 pairs, the advanced PRT charts signal when my conditions are met so it's been OK flicking through the charts/taking the trade once it signals, it's all just a bit clunky/messy, prolly losing a second or two, but we all know how that averages out over time, thoughts were to have 4, one for each pair/or one for each TF and another for the executing the trades...obv. I could have the 3 charts linked on a big 50" plasma...?

well the main objective is wether or not you are comfortable with your set-up, so anyone can only give you an alternative(s).

One screen, ten screens, eod....it's up to you mate.

All I have is a desktop computer, 2.66Mhz processor, 4gb ram, with 2 flat screens, 17". I use a laptop if I want to post here or check email or whatever during the trading day. I have a large desk that accommodates the equipment with printer and overhead TV in case I want to watch CNBC financial news.

Very simple, nothing flashy. For me, if I had to use more then 2 or 3 screens I probably wouldn't be able to focus on any one of them to catch the quick scalp setups.

Thanks Pete, suppose I'm looking to create something quite neat, also want it in the conservatory so it's bright light and I can be in an out in the nicer weather but doesn't spoil the use of it for the rest of family, I'll plough on and get the screens and stuff set up, then perhaps post up an image..with my PRT charting package I've created nice wav sounds for when my 'triple-lock' conditions are met, so having the 3 charts up for each pair would make pulling the trigger with dbfx or Dukas on the other screen as immediate as my reactions allow..

The reason I ask, I mainly scalp using 2 SB companies, fairly low pound/pip, but many trades. Doing okay, exhausting sometimes, but it mainly works for me. Trying to 'keep under the radar' maybe this should be a new 'radar' post, but do you, or anyone, think that scalping using SBs, maybe 5/pip, will stay under the radar? Again, frequent trades.

You can absolutely make a few quid taking trades of short term TFs with the SB firms I know I've done it. However, you're simply making it hard for yerself. I honestly don't buy into the "they're all rigged" theory, the platforms/set ups quite simply can't cope with short term traders and as a consequence you'll find them 50% more expensive per trade on the short term trades. Swinging or positioning is what the SB firms are there for and that's when the comparison isn't as stark/is irrelevant IMHO...

As for flying under the radar I'd suggest its mainly about how much you win and your pound per pip before you flag up. If you're taking on average 200-300 quid a day and not exploiting gaps/lags in info. (in their eyes cheating ) you're fine...

Cheers bud, know of multi montors, just wanted to try and do it myself..and save a grand.. but ta anyway. Heh, we'll have to start a protest group, the fans of PRT having said that the bundles actually look quite good value or am I wrong? Might give them a ring...
