Can anyone recommend a service/site which provides free Forex charts for different time periods?

Also try VT-trader from cms, free demo account available, real time feed from 1min to monthly timeframes. there is also no time limt period on the demo account.

I think a lot of fx firms offer free charting. Most from the same sources.

whilst on the subject of fx charts, does anyone know of fx charts that are not live feed/ running on java applets.

The kind of thing I am thinking along the lines of is bigcharts.com's stock charts which offer up to the second charts for US socks/ indices, but need to be refreshed to see the latest info (ie not live streaming).

Clearly the refresh type charts are inferior but I am looking in to this as I am looking at getting a laptop with gprs card so I can view positions on the move and I want to keep data costs to a minimum.

You could try Astra Charts.....
I believe they have EOD and real time forex charts.
These can also be imported into Metastock, etc.
