Do we over complicate this?

yup - I think the T2W servers will need a few more terabytes for HC's ego...

How shall I ever catch up with you. Cynicism, sarcasm and bullying take up a lot of space as well. Just saying.

Hmm. Seems I'm mighty close to my ad hominem attack line I don't want to cross. I don't think I'm over it however.

Few engage with you. I wonder why that is?

Doesn't count as bullying when it comes to those who want to extract money from newbies HC.

It's a public service.

As for people engaging with me - I don't come here for an ego massage. It is neither a popularity contest or a beauty contest. Of course, if you are selling something, then such numbers must mean a great deal.

I come here because my wife says it makes me less argumentative in meat-space.

What an insult DT.
For all these years we've all assumed that you come here to enjoy our company and to benefit from our profound market insight (as well as contribute some of your own)!
:cheesy:

For the nth time, I am not currently selling anything to anybody. If I go through with my plans, I will get a vendors badge.

Your self-image of public service so much reminds me of politicians who think they can make the rules for the rest of us because of your superior whatever. Of course, you in the UK have so much more experience with this than we do in the US. And we are in the process of rejecting our leadership who want us to have more of what you have.

I'm glad your ego remains unbruised that hardly anyone else challenges your bullying, obfuscation and obstructionism. I guess that will be my public service, even if I don't enjoy it or want to do it.

Dont knock it Mr C, if you were over here you would probably have got your trek desk through the NHS!

America is Fascist actually, not Socialist. Your not rejecting your leadership at all, Wall street just paid for the Republicans recent campaigning, so go figure. Your Tea Party has become a joke, it should have been a beacon of light to the world, but it sold out like YOUR politicians always do which is why you are in two un-winnable wars right now and your congress is writing blank checks to Wall Street every 6 months! Honestly, look at home before you bang on about the UK.

Once again...http://www.wfmj.com/global/video/fla...lv&rnd=9740124

You might be taken seriously were you to take pride in your county's accomplishments if you favor them, could base your statements on fact and could produce a hot link that you test before posting.

which country made spreadbetting illegal?

I don't know. What is spreadbetting? If we banned it and you didn't, it makes my point about elitist rule making interfering with freedom. I'm just as unhappy when my country does it as when other countries do it.

I'm primarily a libertarian. My view is "I really don't care what you do, as long as you don't hurt anyone. Just don't even think about asking me to pay for it."

When I was 12, I thought it was really cool to use long words. I used to look up lengthy adjectives in the Thesaurus when doing my English homework. Eventually my English teacher pointed me in the direction of a piece written by George Orwell (http://xahlee.org/p/george_orwell_english.html). In essence, his point was that if you can use one word instead of three, use one.

Howard, you talk like a 12 year old trying to impress a teacher. I suggest you read the attached link and then maybe attempt to make your statements more concise going forward.

You have your heroes. I have mine. Buckley: The Right Word (Harvest Book).

Sorry, for the delay in reply considering started the topic :)

I have read through a lot of the replies, the initial point I was getting at was take the sentiment negative, positive , go long or short. If the market does not prove your position correct then your position is wrong in that specified time period.

The time period of course is relative of your strategy and account balance!!
When i first started playing this game, (not long ago) i got bombarded off (very kind i must add) people telling me how hard this is, and how it is a long journey etc etc, But I have not found this to be the case. Get a position and maximise it to in the shortest possible time to be out of it when things go sour. I mean if you put a chart with 3 or four different moving averages, and take your trades when x amount of those MA cross. Work out how many times out of 10 this works, if over 5 ideally over 6 then you have a winning strategy.

Perhaps I am wrong and have not been around long enough to be smashed by the market.

Anyway just my thoughts...

Lodian

Lodian, it can be "simple" but it doesn't make it "easy". Some moving average crossover systems work well over time on a variety of markets, but there will always come a stage when it starts to lose money - that's the tough bit.. sticking with your model/system/approach through the losing periods.

It's definitely a long journey, but in a way that's what makes it interesting.

The key is not to use the crossover as the entrance signal but as a bias for which way you should be trading. So, a bullish crossover, look for all areas on retraces to get long.

Yes, you have to be careful with this. I'm a trend follower and use averages for trend but the xover, itself, is wrought with traps in the form of whiplash moves which are very dangerous because they accentuate the fact that they, like all indicators, lag.

I've not yet studied this in depth so this question may be naive.

Like you, I find that cross-over techniques are not a sufficient filter for indicating direction change. I have experimented with building hysteresis into the decision to change directions. Are there any specific sources you would recommend to help me further develop this strategy?

Pardon my lowbrow mentality, Howard, but I don't have a clue as to what "histerisis" is and I can't be bothered to reach out for the Collins that I keep at hand.

Please don't you bother to explain because I do not need it.--I told you that once before in another thread. You do, however, need to write more understandable English if you are going to debate something so fundamental as crossovers.

Some random thoughts:
  1. It is always best to use the correct word in place of a long explanation as it enhances communication. If the audience does not understand the correct word then a small detour can be taken to explain it.
  2. Asking a question is usually not referred to as a debate unless it is part of a Socratic dialog. I was asking a question in an area where I have limited experience.
  3. Crossovers may be fundamental, but many have difficulty using them in effective ways. Whipsawing comes to mind.
  4. There is a difference between uneducated and unintelligent. I always assume the best until proven wrong. It frequently takes more than one instance to convince me I was wrong.
  5. Extreme rudeness is usually not a good indicator of intelligence. The correlation is not perfect, so again, I give even rude people the benefit of the doubt.
  6. In case there are readers here who do understand histerisis, I'll be interested in learning their insights.
