OK so there about 100,00 people are serving time in prison in the UK. Wasting their own time and taxpayers cash !!

Why not get them to do something interesting/profitable. The cream of the science orientated prisoners could be voluntarily placed in the same prison. They could form teams to work on science related projects, like better batteries for electric cars, cold fusion etc. Companies could forward on some of their problems for cash rewards. Of course they would be encouraged to be successful by having extra privileges etc.

I think the results would astound many.
Are you listening out there politicians ?

 All the hackers, cyber crims, fraudsters and tech terrorists in the same prison...
What makes you think they wouldn't share notes, learn from each other
and hook up once out.
Overcrowded prisons 'act as a university of crime'
Thats usually what happens, putting together 'specialists' is probably not a good idea...

Good point.
So careful screening out of those deemed not to be cooperating/useful.

Could even have a financial prison but they would have to be on demo accounts only I suppose.

How about a car MOT prison.

In fact almost privatise some prisons.

I thought the real problem was all those people who were on remand in prison.
Not guilty, nor innocent, but spending time in prison nonetheless.
At tax-payers expense. Due to inefficiencies.

Anyway, all you would end up creating would be a school for evil-geniuses to excel.
Like Lex Luthor.

And where would they get the technical materials, resources, laboratories, funding?
We already have a govenerment that is scientifically illiterate, dont demote it to prisoners.

What if a research project was to take 5 years, but the lead prisoner/scientist was let out after 3?

Might have to pay their own board and lodging nearby and be on unemployment benefit until they leave the project.
What no colour telly etc. Tough.

Hey Pat I admire your faith in the intellect of your average prisoner. The ones who are clever enough to be able to do what you describe are either doing it already in work, or if criminal are too smart to get caught!

I know there are always exceptions but the stats prove that most prison regulars are from the same socio/demographic group and share very similar backgrounds.

Interestingly there are a number of institutions that do this kind of thing anyway, but at a less advanced level than your cold fusion suggestion.

It is heading that way Pat. Probation is being privatised right now with the Courts system probably next. If they can find a decent model for privatisation they would do it in a heartbeat, the problem is that it is not a vote winner and Daily Mail readers would not wear it.
