I've always noticed this stop widening but do you know if they hold it for a set time or is it arbitrary? I've never sat around logging it.

Do you mean the box showing the high/low/open/close etc of each point the cursor is hovering on? Try Options - Display on Charts - Uncheck 'Display cursor details on chart windows'.
