It was just on the news that not only should we accept it, but now it doesn't matter that people can no longer spell, we should actually change the dictionary, and accept the mistakes and not worry!

Yes, lets chuck the queens English out of the window and let the stupid people rule. I'm sure Williams Shakespeare would be so proud of what England has become. What happened to making people work harder? Now the world favours the weak and adapts to them instead.

This came after the news that kids do not respect their parents any more and that is why they commit crimes. Nothing to do with the stupid 'human rights' ******** meaning you can get away with murder these days.

I wonder why I cam back to this country sometimes.

Do u think thats awlrihgt ?

It is hard vork, + I muzz hurrry be4 MY wive cums home !!!

Just about everything here nowadays is becoming uncivilised. I came from a poor background but was taught to spell properly in Primary School in the 1950's. Now we have teachers who can't spell.

Simple politics. Dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator to make sure you capture the votes of the great unwashed and keep yourself in power; Labour have been doing this for years.
Let's face it, if you have a typical 'new' job working for the council as Head of Fire Buckets and Carpet Underlay, are you going to vote Tory ? Not if you want to keep your job.
The nambly-pamby loony liberal lefties continue to keep themselves in work by issuing stupid directives that they can then measure against targets, and in power by running a Job Club for the mediocre, lazy and dim.
Soon we'll have Uni Degrees in 'Sitting Nicely' and 'Not Swearing'. Gas Masks will become compulsory because of universal flatulence, for example the H&S risk of losing control of your car if your passenger breaks wind.

Grrrrr

The true reason for all this is health and safety regulation and the general pussyfication of society. It is not impossible that this is related to women's suffrage.

It's also perhaps worth mentioning everything seems to be illegal now which means there is absolutely no reason to obey the law in the first place.

Well, as long as the illiterate inglishmens don't complain when all the immigrants take the best jobs.

that has gotta be my word of the day!

Bad spelling 'should be accepted'

Common spelling mistakes should be accepted into everyday use, not corrected, a lecturer has said.

Ken Smith of Bucks New University says the most common mistakes should be accepted as "variant spellings".

He lists the 10 most commonly misspelt words, which include "arguement" for "argument" and "twelth" for "twelfth".

Mr Smith says his proposal, outlined in an article in the Times Higher Education Supplement, follows years of correcting the same mistakes.

Mr Smith, a criminology lecturer, said: "Instead of complaining about the state of the education system as we correct the same mistakes year after year, I've got a better idea.

"University teachers should simply accept as variant spellings those words our students most commonly misspell.

I've got a better idea, get better teachers, bring back the cane and teach them English!

Testing the spelling of the general public

"The spelling of the word 'judgement', for example, is now widely accepted as a variant of 'judgment', so why can't 'truely' be accepted as a variant spelling of 'truly'?"

How about because its not the same ****ing word then?!!

Mr Smith also suggested adding the word "misspelt" to the list and all those that break the "i before e" rule - weird, seize, neighbour and foreign.

He said he was not asking people to learn to spell words differently.

I should bloody hope not!

"All I am suggesting is that we might well put 20 or so of the most commonly misspelt words in the English language on the same footing as those other words that have a widely accepted variant spelling," he added.

Arrrghhh!

There aren't any!

A word is either spelt correctly or it is not.

Or does he mean words like 'Their' 'There' and 'They're'.

All sound the same but the grammatical use is different.

You can only be as good as your teacher...or people are just thick.

There are hundreds of posts on here where there are pelling pisstakes but most are ignored because it is the spirit of the post/message which is important.

Although it does rankle when words are spelt wrong and they are too lazy to even use a spell checker.
Not even going into the bit about wrong words in the wrong context.

It does make the writer look bad though.

Standards have slipped dramatically over the years.
The headlines of the 'Sun' newspaper and the American Negro gangsta culture have done little to keep any decent standard of literacy in the schools. Is it any wonder that the kids are idiots?

We came a long way from the spellings of Chaucer and Samuel P, but now it looks like we are going back there.

I bade thee fare de well, good personages of the T2w hamlet. A flagon of ale (or 2) bekons forthwith from a yonder.

there, there, its not there fault
Doesn't mean the same as, "there, there, it's not their fault"

But why should we stop at english. What about mathematics, could we not have variants there too?

There's a movie on TV, with one of the Wilson brothers, where he wakes up in a few hundred years time and discovers that, because everything has been dumbed down over time, he is the cleverest man on the planet. Ridiculous? Maybe given the current world trend, (I'm shorting common sense) it may become reality in years ahead.

"But why should we stop at english. What about mathematics, could we not have variants there too?"

Aye I'm all for that. Gotta go, I've drunk a qyarter of me ale I got 4/5ths left.

In the long run we're all dead.

So wtf does spelling really matter anyway ?

Who tf cares and why tf should we care ?

A greater adoptance of various "pidgin" engish's is inevitable, given the original "rules" of the english language was cobbled together so long ago, out of-pidgin english's, incomprehensible regional dialects and completely foreign words and languages used only by aristocracy.
The issue, is whether a tongue is mutually understandable, and as has always been the case, even with codified english, it wasnt always and still isnt.
Is it better, to understand what someone is actually saying, at the expense of subtlety of meaning, the concise emotive inference of a sentence? I have no idea.
Point being, if everyone spoke english, i doubt the language barriers would fall very quickly, if at all.
Just a thought, tower of babel, whichever way you look at it.

Charlotte Iserbyt - Deliberate Dumbing Down of the World

Makes it much easier for the deviant TPTB to bring about a Fa$ci$t NW0 after an engineered economic depression.

That is very true.

The cattle don't need brain power, they don't need to be capable people able to think rationally, adapt, plan, make decisions, think freely etc. they just need to be able to follow orders, and be obedient little workers who will serve the state.

Perhaps the UK population isn't dum enough just yet for our rulers. There are plans to fluoridate 40% of the water supply, to improve the health of our teeth (BS), despite it being proven that fluoride lowers IQ as it destroys the brain - as you would expect from a toxic substance.

interesting that you would think less of someone due to the quality of their written english, i'm sure most of my posts would be covered in red ink should they be checked for grammer and spelling and i generally dont bother with the spell check either, but then i dont care what people think of me and my posts are my thoughts recorded rather then a well thought out essay.

However i agree that at an educational level it should not be accepted and doing so would further widen the rich poor divide (i'm sure those that pay for education would not accept it)

Agree with your anger Wasp.

There was a long period, not that long ago, when this country was the greatest in the world - and the most civilised - quite an achievement for such a small place. English is still almost always the international language of choice
During all this time, and right up to today, there are many regional accents here with their own local spoken words and variations, but when it comes to written English there is no reason whatever to reduce the standard.

There are people who come to live in this country in order to improve their lot and who laugh at us for wrongly being politically correct and trying to accommodate their less fortunate background and ways into our culture as if in atonement for things like slavery or other alleged imperial 'sins'. (Which countries own leaders sold their own people as slaves in the first place? Which country was the first to abolish slavery?).
People come here because it's better. There is no reason to for us to make it worse in order to accommodate them. Everyone wants better lives for themselves, and letting standards slip is not the way to achieve it. How can you compete if you become inferior to other countries?

"To be born an Englishman is to win first prize in the lottery of life". To which I would add "No matter who your parents are, or whence they came".

NO dumbing down!
