Do you suffer a lot when you trade? Are you under constant stress from trading? What are your thoughts about stress, and is it a major factor in your trading?

Stress in trading is not always harmful, probably depending on the source of the stress. For some traders it is imperative that they run scared. For those traders it is the emotion of fear that can generate the concentration necessary to survive.

For all traders, it has been proven that trading is a stressful business. Tests have shown that even when traders appear calm, relaxed, and comfortable during trading, their heartbeat rises, blood pressure rises, and skin moisture increases.

In other fields we see constant demonstrations of performing under stress. It is the ability to thrive under stress that sets athletic superstars apart. It is the ability to go onstage when a person's stomach is full of butterflies that can make a stage performer into a star.

An effective trader learns to handle stress. His natural instinct of self preservation is what makes him effective when challenged.

There are other forms of stress besides fear. Selfishness can cause a trader to fight greedily for what he thinks he must have. Such a trader will trade without any consideration for personal honesty. The attitude of this kind of trader is "get what you want. Win somehow."

As a trader you must find out who you are and learn to accept yourself that way, or better yet, change; become a better person.

Regardless of the source of your stress, if you are going to trade effectively, you must face the cause of it and learn to deal with it.

Trading can be stressful.

However, for me that stress can only reach a maximum level. Whatever happens, i know that i will aim to continue breathing in and breathing out, staying as calm and clear thinking as i can be.

Personally, for example, i found sitting at a supermarket checkout on a saturday afternoon, much more stressful than trading.

Try abdominal breathing as a way of controlling stress: imagine your upper body is a big balloon and when you breath, let your lower abdomen expand rather than your chest.

See, us Eastern types have our uses.

Cures to stress are:

Scream at the Screen

Slam down the Mouse

Blame China for Everything

Question other traders Parents

Sleep with other traders Parents (or bothers or sisters, or any relation)

In extreme cases sleep with your own parents.

But NEVER BOTTLE IT ALL UP!!! else you might just end up an axe murderer

Is that where this guy went wrong?

When It All Goes Horribly Wrong - Day Trader

Made me smile.

And that is why I won't get an office with other traders. That bloke who gets jumped on... that's me. :devilish: (Probably being beaten up for sitting in my pants.)

And there's the fact that I only trade late afternoons and 5 minutes here and there in the morning.

Yes but trading on your own you don't get to throw rubber bands at others.

Perhaps this is why we are on this site blogging away antagonising each other when the tide turns against us... :cheesy:

True. The other problem is that I play Battlefield 2 a lot and the constant gunfire, explosions and jets screaming past in glorious Dolby stereo would **** off even the most chilled out trader in under 60 seconds.

I enjoy firing off emails to MP's - I love ranting about some injustice or 'political correctness' cr*p.

That soundtrack would be brilliant in Bank Trading Room !!
