I spent most of the day yesterday playing poker online and was having a bad day. It got to the point where I wondered why I was wasting so much time when I could be doing something else. Then I flopped a straight and a nice person with K2 decided to give me all his money. Then I remembered why I like this game :)

Why on earth did this opponent think they could bluff you out of this ? All they had was King high and any Ace or your pair of 7s would defeat them let alone a straight.

I have no idea what he was doing and I don't think he did either. He must have been either drunk, on drugs or under 3 years old to play it that badly. Hope he is a regular player, I could do with more opponents like that :)

I know I'm only a beginner but it seems to me to be the next step up from the funny money - where people aren't really playing hard is the tiny 2 - 4 cent tables on Noble poker. Can't lose too much. It's amazing how quick it can trickle away though on the $1 - $2 tables.

Have you tried 'sit and go' tournaments? I found those a lot easier than the cash tables when I first started.

The 2-4 cent tables might be too much like the play money tables. I can't take that level seriously. I like the 10/20cent nl tables on the tribeca platform. You can take $40 to those tables, just enough to hurt a bit when you lose but not enough to make it too painful. The no limit tables are good because you can reduce the number of players seeing the flop when you have a good hand. Sometimes the limit games are more like no fold'em hold'em. They also have sit and go tournaments starting at 10 cents.

I thought I would be clever and get a bit of help from the software advertised on the web. Unfortunately I was already signed up with Party Poker so missed out there. I then downloaded Shark before getting an account with PokerRoom.com. It doesn't seem to work. Apparently incompatible. Their graphics are poor too !
So sticking with Noble for the time being ( ultra low stakes !! )
Made some and lost some, about evens after 15 1/2 hour sessions. Quite encouraging I think.

If it's not been mentioned before, www.pokerindicator.com software works with PartyPoker, Pat. Nice bit of kit it is too.

Thx Frugi
I'm giving it a try. Takes 24hrs to sign up to Empire so will let you know.
My inability to use Shark and Hold'em Analyser may have been my own incompetence or not ......

Be carefull when using software on Party Poker, IGM sites and Empire Poker. These sites scan you machine when you start up the software to see what you are running. If you are running a piece of software they deem to give you an unfair advantage they will suspend your account and the nice people they are, they will also not give your deposit back.

Some sites even take a screen shot for their records, just to make sure you are not using software.

This sounds dodgy to me and is effectively hacking into your system, how are they able to scan your PC for particular software ? and what software do they consider will give an unfair advantage ?

Thanks frugi I think you may have cost me $100. I thought I had got pokerindicator via Empire, but i seem to have lost my $100 deposit. Empire don't recognize my name etc. ??

Been in touch with pokerindicator people. Surprisingly they actually replied ! They suggested I contact Empire ?? Empire have sent a computer generated email acknowledging signing up saying it takes them 24-72 hours to set up account. So maybe not all is lost.
Thanks to adrianallen for pointing out the problem

Very dodgy, if you install the poker software on your machine you effectively give it the same rights of access to your machine as you have, also if you have a firewall you need to give it permission to access the internet. So basically you give it rights to pretty much do anything.

Some poker/casino software is effectively no better than spyware.

Although on the site they do specify some software, they are pretty vague about what you can and can't use.

If you actually ask them if a piece of software is okay, they also give a very not specific answer.

For what it's worth, I've been using pokerindicator with PartyPoker for 6 months with no problem at all. I cannot speak for Empire and didn't mention them in my above post.

From a quick browse of some forums it appears that software which consults a central database of player statistics may be frowned upon and players using such may be barred from play by certain poker firms. As will those using certain bots like WinHoldEm.

PI does not do this so should be okay. On PI's site they claim "This program does not play for you, and therefore does not violate the rules or policies of any online poker room" (though that's not to say they are lying and can easily weasel out of any claims for loss by referring you to the small print in the terms & conditions).

PartyGaming's T&C firmly backs up this view -

http://www.partypoker.com/about_us/unfair_advantage_policy.html

PI is not on their banned list.

I'm sorry if folllwing my recommendation has cost you your deposit Pat. At least it wasn't a stock tip. :) However I would be very surprised indeed if you have.

We do not suspend/cancel/freeze a player account or confiscate any funds in that account, unless that player, having been first notified by us, continues to play on our site using the same offending software.

Now THIS is dodgy.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5658521389

Wonder how long it will them take them to get round the advertised "stealth" mode...for $6.99 I am tempted to find out. :)

I think the bot software sold on Ebay basically uses a piece of software called AutoIT to take the recommendation on Calculatem and press the button for you on the poker software. AutoIT also can be used to find out the button names in the poker software window (which is how it knows which button to click on).

Pretty easy to create one for yourself if you can be bothered, but would you trust a poker bot with your money?

Also on some poker bots, the stealth mode actually involved using another machine and some remote control software. So you dont actually run the poker bot software on the same machine.

Frugi
No problem - from your past posts over the the months I know you meant to be helpful. I expect it will work out OK. Pokerindicator people seemed helpful, so I'm hopefull.
Adrian
That bot scenario sounds worrying.I wonder if Kasparov plays poker.

What a hassle to sign on through an intermediary - . Empire finally recognise me and but not my $100 deposit. That's somewhere I suppose ?
Some good ideas from Adrian too
