Northern Rock nationalisation

what happens if there is another Northern Rock in the next year or two. Would the government be able to get away with nationalising two banks. I think it will be years before they will be able to get rid of Northern Rock. Maybe Nationwide Building Society might be interested as they are cash rich but would they want the mortgage book.

Interestingly, I understand the proposed legislation being rushed through Parliament, will allow nationalisation of a UK bank just on the Chancellor's say-so. God only knows what that could lead to. On your second point, i don't think Nationwide are that stupid. Neither is Branson who, as an astute player, thought he might pull a fast one.

At this rate Maggie Thatcher and Conservatives will be remembered for privatising.
And Labour with the rest of the dunces remembered;
for Nationalising everything..............

'THEY WHILE AWAY THE HOURS, SINGING TO THE FLOWERS COS THEY HAVENT GOT A BRAIN'.............

To the wizard of OZ

Gedward,

Privatisation - giving away our assets
Nationalisation - giving away our money.

Grant.

Cheers for the lesson Grant but which ever government's are elected we're all still screwed from the day we are born right up until after we die. This will go on as long as people are being born and as long as we have holes in our arses......................

Gedward,

Until fairly recently I was a life-long Labour supporter. Now I pray for a Tory government, and you remind me of reality.

The hate I had for some of Thatcher's acolytes has been inherited by some of their Labour counterparts.

Depressing.

Grant.

They're all the same with only a few exceptions. You can always tell when they're lying - look for the open mouth. Best person to look after your interests is you.

Grant i was brough up by my Gran who used to tell me that if Labour ever got in they will be the party to look after the working class and the poor people. She was actually right in a way. What i realise now is that Labour mean any poor person from anywhere in the world if you get my drift.....

I reckon who ever is in power its a bit like the grass is greener on the other side syndrome. If conservatives get in they'll soon be back to chasing rent boys and being found tied up in dungeons as they were before.

MP's dont realise they were voted there by us to put our best interests at heart. As soon as they see they steps of Westminster and all the perks and freebies it brings we go straight out of the window. Also the power trip some of these MP's are on.

My rant over........................

Would have been better to nationalise MG Rover thereby guaranteeing many more jobs across the Midlands. Would have cost less too.

Not that I would've ever bought one those nasty cars, but still, you get my point, you've gotta have a heart....

It's a hard knock life for some, a hard knock life for some...

In the 1970s one of my friends always bought VW - he used to say: "why buy British when you can buy the best ?" Unfortunately, he was right.

MG Rover's heritage was one of virtual nationalisation for many years and that's why it ultimately failed. Only a state-aided company could sell cars for less than they cost to make because they didn't know how much they cost to make!

If Jon Moulton had been allowed to buy Rover, it would probably be a successful company by now. (I didn't notice him bidding for NRK). However, the politicians always know better.......................how much real business experience have any of the present lot got?

I feel really sorry for the workforce at NRK - their prospects are bleak. They have been let down by a government that failed to reign-in the likes of Applegarth and senior management that shouldn't have been allowed to run a whelk stall.

Business experience? How much experience of anything in the real-world outside politics, think-tanks or quangos? None. Career politicians all, and that is the root of many of our political problems.

Gedward,

What your gran said was probably true in bygone days (the converse being the tories only look after the rich). When Jack Straw was Home Secretary, he tried to introduce trials without juries (I think it was called diplock courts in N Irealnd during the IRA troubles) - he makes Eugene Terreblanche look like a Young Socialist.

"any poor person" but not the British. Ain't that the truth.

The tories may be back chasing rent boys but I don't remember them telling people not to do it. Unlike the fuuckin' Labour hypocrites.

Grant.

I go along with all politicians being the same...self interest primarily and if not primarily, ultimately.

However, there is One difference between the Two groups...Tories like to champion the entrepreneur..Labour will have us all in the workhouse....equality....lowest common denominator.....they simply refuse to see that that people are not equal....hence the tide of mass migration of the "haves"...for if the "haves" are leaned on too much...then it's easy enough to bugger off.....never to be had again..

Nice work if you can get it !

Saw this on BBC web just now:

Failure reward?
Mr Applegarth is in line to get a £760,000 payment, plus £25,000 in non-cash and other benefits. The total will be split into monthly payments.
[.................. blah blah...... disgruntled shareholders]

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman said it was "clearly a matter for Northern Rock, which operates independently of government". [Is he joking or what?]

Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrats' Treasury spokesman, called the payment "outrageous". [Shame the Libdems are too dim to make this bloke leader]

Heathrow T5, NRK, Network Rail, NHS computer, numerous defence contracts ................... Is private trading the only job where you get a kick in the wallet's boll**ks for non-performance ?
