How To Describe Trading To Someone

(hope you all had a good day)

in all seriousness, I think the problem is one of mindsets.

Salespeople are more likely to understand trading.
They understand the idea that not all sales calls result in a deal.
They know that if they make enough calls, someone will bite; they know that the total of successful sales outweigh the number of calls resulting in no sales.
They also understand the nature of irregular incomes.

People who are salaried, ie, get paid the same, safe, regular, amounts, dont get it, and think anything other than regular income is somehow inherently risky.
(one of my pet theories is that salespeople are likely to make it as traders, since they have acquired the mindset of hits/misses, and likely to stick with a plan until success kicks in.)

agreed

my friends (apart from one who also trades lol) always say i'm gambling... one even said "you can't beat the market because the EMH holds" seriously i was like GTFO

but who cares what others think, we're not in high school anymore and we're making money like a boss

How do you describe it they usually look in horror as its sounds like some big scam and it doesn't exist? I keep away from telling them the Forex market is the largest in the world.

"It's like a big casino. Market - up or down - throw ya wedge on."

Never talk specific lingo to a non-trader. They wont understand and you'll sound stupid.

Edit: Specific lingo even sounds stupid to another trader. Don't go there.

I preferred the word game:

where were we? Somewhere between Anna Friel and Cop a feel...

every morning i hold my wallet open.

the market takes a huge runup ,kicks me in the **** and takes my money.

sometime they miss.

I work in a pub and people always ask me "What else do you do?" and when I explain the them that I'm trying to teach myself how to trade forex/shares, they either glaze over or decide they are qualified to give me trading advice. It really annoys me, it's not like I go around telling the guys from Airbus how to put a rivet in a wing, or the guys from Bank of America how to do a credit check or whatever! Oh and people always say "Ohhh its a risky business that!" to which I always reply "It's only as risky as you make it!". Anyone else experience this kind of advice giving response? Sometimes if I know the person is a know-it-all I just avoid telling them and tell them that working behind the bar is all I do!

Sam.
