good backtesting software?

There are loads of different software packages for this. Do a google search and you'll find them. Wealthlab and Tradestation are good.

It appears there's a regular fee for tradestation. Any small chance there's free backtesting software out there?

most of the good one charge fees.

having said that, excel (or any spreadsheet) can be good for backtesting if you have the data and know your way around the language.

Amibroker for $280 is excellent value. It also handles portfolio level backtests, which some/most don't. You'll need to get stuck in on the coding though.

Ok, so I think I'm pretty good at Excel. Now how can we get the data for free?
