GCSEs- meh!

If it's that easy then all you have to do is make sure you get your 11 A* or whatever. They might be useless when it comes to getting a job but the best unis have to sort through thousands of amazing apps, if you don't have a load of A* they'll chuck you away before they even get to A-Levels and extra-curric etc.

There are eighteen workers in an office. Some are Grade 1, who earn £19,000 per annum. The remainder are grade 2, who earn £18,000 per annum. If the total salary bill for the eighteen workers is £330,000, how many workers are there in each of the two grades.

1) Convert the above information into an equation.

2) Solve the equation ( show all working out )

1) Convert the above information into an equation.

£330,000 (Z) = 18000 X + 19000 Y (XY=18)

2) Solve the equation ( show all working out )

330 /18 = 18.33

average is 18.33 so there must be twice as many getting 18 as 19 so 18 / 3 = 6 eg X = (2x6)12 Y = 6

GCSE style

x = number on £19k
y = number on £18k

1) 19x + 18y = 330
2) x + y = 18

Multiply 2) by 19 gives 3) 19x + 19y = 342

1) - 3) gives -y = -12 so y = 12

From 2) x + y = 18, sub in y = 12 gives x = 6
