Best Thread Arabian's *serious* Thread

Dave,

You mention algos, are these always present or do they only kick in at certain levels depending on liquidity? Also, have you ever traded a 'Ross Hook'?

algos are ever present except when they're turned off by the masters of the algos... typically only around big economic figures, when they detect extreme volatility, things like that. One especially evil firm called RSJ does a ridiculous proportion of the volume in all exchange traded fixed income futures, but particularly LIFFE STIRs.

See http://www.rsj.com/en/algorithmic-trading/current-volumes/ for example.

Without Joe Ross I don't know where I'd be. More mentally balanced, probably.

ps nobody quote me on that other post so Black Swan stays confused.

It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.
:devilish:

Thankyou very much kind sir.

One more Q. What is your preferential order type and why? If somebody is to be pwned, what is the weapon of your choice?

Kind regards.

Thanks for all the feedback. Re implied/spread orders: presumably (correct me here if I'm wrong) the spread order is engineered so that (i) I don't care about the absolute traded Mar, June values and (ii) the spread order is guaranteed filled if and only if I enter both legs AT THE REQUIRED SPREAD.

Is it correct to say that implied orders may cause the level of liquidity to be overstated, because they are subject to other constraints?

I can imagine a situation where my spread order implies orders to (say) buy March, and sell June, and someone sells a lot of March contracts, without buying June. If the required spread is not achieved, my 'implied' order on March is not executed, right, and less than the advertised bid is actually traded.

If that's right I begin to think that the exchange must implement a window within which it can execute/reconcile multi-leg orders. No doubt the order rules are a real can of worms.

Dave,

One more, one more. Outside of your firm, would you trade stirs? If yes, who would you go through?

TIA, bro.

Just to add,

Great thread. A few obvious things that stand out, technology, information and interpretation. A far cry from trading off one laptop, with just charts.

Makes one think to say the least.

Cheers, AN.

Re: 101 ways to kill a cat

hi :)

Can you go into a bit more detail here please?

Someone sold 11 000 lots of March 12 Short Sterling at 14. That's a very large trade for a sterling outright. Because I know the evil algos that run that market teh majority of the time "think", I knew they'd dump a little bit at 13 (they did) and then manipulate it up to 14 to see if they can a) get the market moving up and if not b) at least dump a bit of their inventory to idiots, before then assuming the big trader is right and trading in his direction.

So...

the Algo was involved on the bid, and as this was hit in size the algo is now sitting with a long position - so it sells some of it back to the market at 13 ASAP (it has more longs than it wanted), and then tries to generate momentum to the upside or at least scratch the remainder of its long position?

but because you consider a move to the upside unlikely to garner any support from the rest of the market, you front run the algo exiting the remainder of its inventory for a loss / load up shorts and trade in the direction of the original order?

??

Will answer questions later when I'm in a more tip top condition (as it were) but just to say now have system set up at home, with two minor problems... firstly I didn't think of power setup: I need 9 sockets to run my system, so tomorrow will be buying a couple of extension leads. Secondly, I insisted on delivering it, because I enjoy driving vans on occasion. Unfortunately, I enjoy driving vans because of teh reckless way you can drive them, and I have a bad feeling some screens will be smashed after a deceleration from 45-0 I estimate at 0.8g... not quite at the threshold of grip but bloody close to it... and they were poorly packaged... one of them is certainly quite damaged on the exterior...

(Oh and I dropped some outside the office too)

Nothing much mate, i can't remember. Ugly traders are definately out of bounds though.

Those dirty Schneider ba$tards. I take a cr@p, I look in the bowl, it looks better than those ugly motherf***ers.

How do they recruit do you think? Go round the travelling circuses askin' if they got any f***in' freaks for sale?

I could frankly take a pic of it now, it wouldn't look all that different apart from the screens having stuff on!

(and there being less crap all over)

(and if I take it now there may be a bit of a surprise)

wasted a few minutes on pic but couldn't get one that was... deserving... of the thread.

Tried weed, pipe, vapouriser and a (sadly legal, you can buy it in some places under the name of "flour") white powder all over the desk... didn't work.

Tried opening the curtains (it looks directly onto one of my balconies so glass is floor to ceiling) and doing the porno thing, but odd as it sounds I'd much rather have my dick on here than my face and the former just isn't appearing (lulz) while the latter is.

Tried other variations (and you dont wanna know all of em)... basically this is gonna have to wait a bit alas...
