Hi,

Most arcaders seem to be trading bonds. I was wondering if any of you are trading indices? I'm starting at an arcade and I feel I have got in at an excellent firm because they are very open to encouraging their recruits to chose which market/s they wish to specialise in. I was wondering if any of the more experienced traders here have any views on the different markets in regards of their different characteristics in terms of trading and therefore are there any that you would advice for or against a new trader getting into?
I have spoken to a few young traders that have been trading the FTSE that said they were finding it a tricky market. On the other hand i have noticed more and more arcades are picking up on the surge in commodity markets and opening up more oil desks and trading with good success.
I'd be really interested to hear your views,

thanks,

Tom

which arcade are you at?

risk is their main concern i believe - which is why they love spreads so much.

perhaps es may be a good one to look at: its the daddy, and doesnt have as much volatility as the others mostly due to its liquidity.

good luck

Thanks for the reply Charlie.

I suppose due to the limited volatility ES would be appealing to arcades regarding getting their trainees on it. Although I have heard it can be prone to a lot of fake break outs (but im not sure). However i have also known a few arcade traders trading the DAX which strikes me as the total opposite in terms of movement but i suppose horses for courses.

regarding which firm i'm at i have pmed you. It may sound weird but i feel its probably not best to mention publicly. This industry seems to have eyes and ears everywhere and just starting out in my career I wouldn't want to be caught slagging off or giving away any info they dont want me to give by accident. (sorry, might seem a bit OTT but have been caught out before and i needed to do some fast back peddling)

Thanks again,

Tom

not at all - i think pm is the best route.

i dont think es gives as many false breakouts as the others - depends on how you clarify a valid b/o and on what time frame of course. the issue with es is that you will have odd hours to other european traders.

i have never looked at a dax chart so couldnt say, although people say european indices have less false b/o than us ones. personally i cant comment. how about eurostoxx?

all the best,

Tremendous fun in the Dax at this very minute.....hope u are all enjoying it.....

Hi Tom, I trade the DOW and as I specialise in it. I have found after 6 years I can read the moves. Also the eco / news is not hidden from your view, and my indicator works well on the Dow for long and short entrys. why not try the NAS 100 as your drawdown will be smaller but do specialise, as the more you understand how an Index moves the better your profits
regards and good luck for the future

Hi Tom,

Depends on your trading style, all have different characteristics, I have been trading the DAX for the last month, as a former FTSE100 trader I find that the DAX spends a greater time in one direction hence, primarily a trend trader this is perfect at the moment and very profitable.

Eurostoxx will probably be encouraged to limit risk, but you research the major european and US, and I can guarantee one will stand out for you.

James

Top tip - go short.
