By trend following strategies do you mean break out pattern indicators?

How on earth do you manage to read about trading strategies for years and avoid finding out what a trend following strategy is?

A good lesson would be to work out exactly why your demo system worked and real trading didn't.

Oh, and I agree with the comments about scalping with spread betting. That's a bad place to start.
