At IB you can specify destination exchange (arca,island,bats,...) in your order ticket; if unspecified IB uses "smart" routing that supposedly gets you the best execution.

Unfortunately it appears this restriction is enforced at the IB server.
One workaround I found whenever I encounter this blank chart problem is to shut down TWS then immediately log back in. On a fast computer it only takes about 10 seconds to get back to trading.
I wonder if it has anything to do with IB's historical data limitations (also know as "throttling" or "pacing" rules). I usually open up a 2-day 5-min intraday chart window and manually enter symbols. It loads pretty fast but as soon as I go through more than 6 symbols in 30 seconds the chart...
