For the absolute basics I found 'Currency Trading for Dummies' very informative. Rather than diving straight into trading it explains all about how Forex works, what drives the market & individual currencies, the characteristics of currency pairs, leverage, swap etc. Gave me many a-ha moments.

Slippage will hurt you as well!
