How to break into trading

I am looking to break into trading as a career and owuld like advice on what is the best way to transition into it.

I have been employed for the past fews years as a technology consultant and so quite experienced with programming and other associated activities.

I woould like to know how I can best position myself by doing exams? reading books? etc.. to give me the necessary skills to reak into the industry.
