Hi Guys
Does any of you knows something, or is using MESA8 indicators developed by John Ehlers. I read his book 'Cybernetic Analisys for Stocks and Futures' and I like some of the indicators developed by him. I couldn't find the code for most of his newer work on the net, and before I decide to spend $495 i would like to hear some opinions.

Because I don't use TradeStation I will have to rework all the indicators to fit my system and maybe some of you know where I can find the code for (Crossover Momentum, Plus and Minus Amplitude)

thanks

hi,

If you make any progress let me know. I think I'll be buying MESA 8 for NeuroShell this week. I want to do some work on that as well.

There is lots of code and articles on his website.

Hi Guys,

MESA8 was of little practical value in may trading. It never lived up to its expectations and billing.
First of all it is slow to the point that I stopped using it altogether but more seriously it did not seem to work for me at all.

I suggest that you subscribe to their paid service IndiceZ - Rocket Science for Indices Traders and see by yourself. They charge $79.95 per month but the first month is free of charge.

I did not subscribe myself but I read horror stories about them from other forums; I quote:
"The bottom line is that this year, while the market has been trending the strategy they utilize which is based on MESA8 and Cybernetic Analysis addons they offer is down more than $13000 so far this year on all of their indexes combined."

However I would strongly recommend the Noxa CSSA addon instead.
Noxa Analytics Inc.
Advanced Neural Network Software for Financial Forecasting and Stock Prediction

This is a cycle-based addon that provides zero-lag turning points. It improved my trading by two folds. Turning point are very accurate. You might want to have a look at this thread:
http://www.trade2win.com/boards/software/29736-noxa-indicators-neuroshell.html#post404496

Let me know want you think.

since I gather that you have both MESA8 and NOXA CSSA, can you tell us how do they compare?

Ok, MESA8 is very slow, and few people mentioned that, which rules it out for intra day trading. But that can be because MESA8 has very accurate algorithm, and if you want accuracy than you have to do finer search.

- One interesting question is, do MESA and CSSA generally find the same frequencies or they are completely off?

- Other obvious question would be, which one performs better out of sample ( when "Save optimization that performs best on later paper trading" is switched off. )

cheers, dejan

Noxa might be better

I bought noxa few weeks ago, I am using Noxa to train my forex data, my opinion:
- During Trading Strategy optimization, Noxa give faster result (10-20 minutes using self optimization).
- I have Mesa 8 but the result not quite good for me (take very long optimization time) and the effort to get best trading strategy is quite difficult compare with noxa (hope for you more easier).
- The strongest point of noxa, it can detect the turning point Peak/valley of the price action (if you success to set the parameter or put correct parameter range for full optimization) while Mesa may get lag about 2 bars.
- In term of pricing Noxa is the most expensive compare with other add ons (cost $350 compare with others less than $300)

I am still learning using noxa, come to my post:
http://www.trade2win.com/boards/software/29736-noxa-indicators-neuroshell-2.html

We can discuss in this thread about Mesa by posting some finding (example chart, prediction or trading strategy).

Good luck with Mesa

Sample forex trading strategy build with Mesa8

Hi Friends,

Here I show you sample of my trading strategy using Mesa. It was implemented on forex pair EURUSD 15m chart.
Trading strategy parameters setup for both:
1. Rules:cross over
2. Trading size: buy as many as possible with Initial account balance $500
3. Dates: Optimization 2008.03.06, paper trading 2008.03.12
4. Costs: entry/exit commission per trade $2 (to cover the spread on EURUSD)
5. Optimization: Maximize ReturnOnAccount * EquityCurveCorrelation

Trading Strategy Mesa #1 has more frequent compare with Mesa #2, I add some filtering on #1 to generate #2.
The result is only for training/optimization and paper trading, I need some update data to see its performance on real.

Have a nice trade with Mesa.

Thanks for posting the info and pics. This performance is just unreal.

Did you try this in real time?

cheers, dejan

You will get real data when the market is open.

Hi Dejan,

as I said in my post, I can not tested it on real data since now forex market is closing. Tomorrow when the market is open I can get the real time trading result. See my post in Noxa, with Neuroshell the standard setting you will get gray color for training/optimization, orange for paper trading and green for real testing data.

By he way what is Neuroshell version you have, Neuroshell EOD or Day trade pro? it will impact what kind of data you need.

Cheers,
Arry

I have NS Daytrader Pro, v5.4 rev. 1.

Currently I do not collect data with NSDT Pro, but with TS2000i Global Server and than I convert it manually. It is a big pain in the neck, but I am still searching for strategy.

Updating data into NSDT

Hi Dejan,

The version NSDT you have is same with my own, it is the latest version available.

Uhh, in the beginning I have same experience how to convert data in CSV that can be read by NSDT, very strong effort. Adding new row "Date", "Time", "Open", "High", "Low", "Close", change date format, using MS-excel or Notepad. Last time I create my own macro to simplify converting in excel.

Currently, In MT4, I used an expert adviser (kind of user customized program) to generate a CSV file, change as well the date format in Control panel, Regional & language option then change the date format into yyyy.mm.dd as the NSDT file format. This all for static data. for online data, I use DDE server available in NSDT then connect it with MT4 DDE.

You can have one add-on called MTFEED, it cost about $30-90 per month to connect NSDT with MT4. I prefer to use my own add on (smaller version of MTFEED). It is a pity to for me to subscribe forex data while it can be get freely.

Cheers,

Hi Group,

I use both Mesa8 and Noxa's CSSA. I've read both of John's books too. I think that cycle analysis is one of the most useful tools for a technical analyst to come to terms with.

Both are good packages with many simiarities and a few differences.

At their most basic level Mesa8 and CSSA give you a bandpass filter you can apply to your price input. In other words the algorithm takes the price input and removes higher frequency noise and lower frequency trend leaving you just a cycle of somewhat known frequency. There are usually two user inputs used to tune a bandpass filter, being the frequency and the width. If we tighten the width you get a more regular sine wave at the expense of generalisation. This is very useful but only if you get the right frequency.

It's important to understand that Slow Stochastic, RSI, MSCD Histogram etc are all variations on the same theme. That is, they are all bandpass filters too, although somewhat crude and difficult to tune to a particular market without a lot of experience.

Recall that bandpass filters are only really useful if they are tuned to the right frequency. Now here is where Mesa8 and CSSA differ - Mesa8 has an algorthm which looks at the history and tries to find the best frequency for you. CSSA on the other hand will give you an array of bandpass filters ordered from most significant to least (usually ending up being approximately from longest to shortest wavelength) and suggest that you pick the right one.

CSSA has a really good feature in that you can set a lead amount, eg forcing the indicator to lead by a few bars which I find works very well.

Mesa8 has a amplitude feature which gives you an idea of the significance of the cycle.

Both have a signal-to-noise type indicator that tells you how dependable a bandpass is currently.

Both seem to have good support.

To be honest, in my trading, I usually resort to visually inspecting a set of 5 signals provided by bandpass filters of frequencies 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55 bars. Generally cycles of increasing amplitude, or large amplitude seem most dependable, especially when traded in the direction of the prevailing trend.

An alternative to the above might be to arbitrarily run your price history through a bandpass then adjust the frequency till the most recent trough and peak line up and then trade just this cycle.

In summary, and only in my somewhat limited experience, both are good tools. Mesa8 tries to solve the problem for you but often gets it wrong whereas CSSA gives you an array of solutions and tries to help you to pick the right one. Both give you tools to help you assess if your choice is working (ie signal to noise ratio or similar, amplitude etc). CSSA probably represents good value for money. If your budget can stretch to it get both.
