Anti-Spyware

The one I use Max SUCURE Spyware Detector...Is not on there???........

Absolute best PC security tool.....common sense....since the biggest seecurity threat to any PC is the one that sits in front of it and prsses the buttons. :):

An interesting view of the effectiveness of popular anti-spyware applications.

That link was quite interesting. However, when I read this link

I changed my view!

Eric Howes argument is very detailed, and convincing.

I now believe anti-spyware testing to be a very, very complex subject, and shouldn't be glossed over so easily.

Have a look and see if you agree.

Yup blue interesting article, which really supports my view of the first article, but from an entirely different perspective. The article I posted, for me anyway highlights fairly miserable performance for a product range if you are paying for it. I think the lack of adequate testing highlighted in your article adds weight to that. To me both articles say when it comes to these products, keep your money in your pocket and use a small cross-section of the free ones.

I've had a complete rebuild on my PC. and now looking for adwear/spywear/ I used to to pay $29.95 for 12 months. But some of you guys on here say the free ones are just as good?

The IT guy who fixed my PC have put AVG free and Windows Defedner/spypearw. are these any good?

Any help would be appreciated

yep, both pretty good. Avast Home edition antivirus (google it - also free) is a good alternative if you're not happy with AVG and has some added functionality.

I use AVG, Avast! and Antivir on different computers, all free and all good programs, I have windows defender on my XP machines, it's had mixed reviews, but I use it anyway, two other good programs are SuperAntiSpyware, A squared free, also spyware blaster if you use IE. All free.

rossored and roguetrader

Thanks for you info.

One more question If I may. since I have had a rebuild on my laptop the fan comes on much more. I have Windows Defender and AOL free Sypwear and AVG.. Maybe to many running in the back round.

I thought AVG was continuing to be free with version 7.5? They have dropped support for v7.0 from January instead - I may have this wrong.

Can't think why they should cause the fan to come on really - that's normally caused by higher workload and hence CPU load - which causes the fan to come on. Have you cleaned it or had it cleaned lately? Laptops are prone to getting the fan intake and exhaust vents clogged with dust and lint.

If you're not confident enough to open the lappie (what make is it? i may be able to advise) then a makeshift temporary solution is to put a vacuum hose quite close to the inlet and exhaust ports and it will suck out some muck, but a better solution is to open the case or have someone do it for you, and clean the heatsink out. If the laptop's any more than 6 months old it'll be clogged half to death.

Think you need to check your source on the free part. The statement that people keep throwing around refers to support for the last version, they have just released a nre free version in the last 6 weeks or so Vers 7.5.
They are however in bed with MSFT. Most of their spying is done through a critical update, so for those using XP auto updates your prolly being spied on already.

AntiVir, Sunbelt Kerio, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido, WinPatrol, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard.
There's no room left for spyware! :cheesy:

I use Router firewall, Sygate software firewall, Avast! AV, A squared anti-malware, SuperAntiSpyware, Spywareblaster, System Safety Monitor, and Spybot S&D, covers most areas.
I use Opera 9 for most browsing.
Gonna take a look at some of the stuff like Sandboxie etc, but don't know too much about them yet
