Psychology is important to trading. I would like to know the personality type of the successful trader - or at least what they perceive themselves to be.

Please respond to this simple poll if you have been trading for at least six months and have been profitable overall. The definitions of the personality types are below. (Just a bit of fun, taken from here).

If you are not trading or have been trading only a few months please don't answer this poll, whether you are successful or not, as it will skew the statistics.

Choleric: This is the commander-type. Cholerics are dominant, strong, decisive, stubborn and even arrogant.

Melancholy: This is the mental-type. Their typical behaviour involves thinking, assessing, making lists, evaluating the positives and negatives, and general analysis of facts.

Sanguine: This is the social-type. They enjoy fun, socialising, chatting, telling stories - and are fond of promising the world, because that's the friendly thing to do.

Phlegmatic: This is the flat-type. They are easy going, laid back, nonchalant, unexcitable and relaxed. Desiring a peaceful environment above all else.

I think we all have our own preconceptions but it will be interesting to see which ones come out in which order. I've already made my prediction but I won't write it down yet.

I do recognise that a poll on a forum might be skewed toward the type of personality that attends message forums but we'll see.

You might want to use the Myers-Briggs system instead. This one is an outdated and obsolete model.

I can't answer the poll since the delineation is too black-and-white. I mean, I and pretty much everyone else sport these traits to one extent or another, and it doesn't incorporate enough nuance either.

Thanks, that's interesting. The poll was intended to be a bit of fun, so I didn't really research it. I had my own ideas and these four character types roughly represented it.

Another system I'm aware of is known colloquially as "Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds". You can guess from the names what the differences are (basically the same as the poll above, except for the last one).

I realise that people cannot be defined by any one set of traits. However, they might believe they display one set more than the others. So those who think they display all equally have a good reason not to take the poll.

Thanks for that. Problem with the questionnaire is it contains a lot of BS questions.

You are more interested in a general idea than in the details of its realization

How are we supposed to know about ourselves in such detail? We answer such questions how we want to feel we are like, not how we actually are.

A simple poll that has four clear choices is just as enlightening.

Edit: Approx dominant percentages from that thread: I(68) N(84) T(78) J(70). We don't know whether the respondents are all successful traders. The low regard for the sensing (details) and dominance of intuitiveness (big picture) is interesting. But then again, we all like to think we are "big picture" people. That sounds like the person in charge. Details are for robots and Ipad assembly workers.

BTW I was INFJ. Some of the questions I couldn't answer and I just tried to provide an overall sense of what I was probably like. The description read like an astrology column...

I am Choleric, and the hardest thing ever is to turn emotions off when trading

Melancholy, it seems A blood easy to be this kind of men.
consider the thing over and over. and worry about the result.
really not good type for trading

About your personality type. Type watching in team situations. Having information about personality types and preferences can be quite useful.

thanks for sharing.

My type is 'Melancholy'. And actually I am always about it: try to manage risks and avoid losses. I am sometimes too much afraid for trading. That's bad.. Suppose 'Phlegmatic' is the best for trader - always calm whatever may happen))

successful trade must be rational and minimize his/ her emotion interfiering with tactitcs chosen ..

I took this online test and it said INTJ or something, no idea about this classification.

Most of the traders that I know are classified as INTJ.

I suspect INTJ's are attracted to this sort of thing.

I'm a mix of all 4 types ........like everyone else if you really look at it
