Good day All,

I'm off on a little journey... I'd love it if you would join me... at least in terms of moral support and guidance :)...

Have a little look at the picture I've attached...

Yep, people (and I use that term in it's loosest sense ;)) actually live there. And yes, we have electricity - got it a few days ago :p. Now you have an idea of where I am coming from (literally!), I'll tell you what I'm doing...

I am leaving for a 14 hour ferry journey in, well, 2 hours actually. Whereupon I will be embarking on an adventure to The Big Smoke. I am young, free, and ambitious. I don't have a mortage or kids or any such "impediments". From all the great contributors here on T2W, there is quite a lot that do have such ties. I applaude them for spending their spare time learning to trade, trying to make a better and more satisfying life for themselves, and in some cases, their family. As such, I feel I should make the most of the position I am in...

I have harvested, and filtered, a list of 30+ trading companies based mainly around London. These are a combination of 'arcades' and prop. firms. The plan is to basically go along each and every one in person, smartly dressed, and with CV in hand. I will rinse and repeat until I get something. I am not new to trading, but I am also not consistently profitable. I believe I have read every post on T2W on arcades, prop firms, and such like - so I think I know roughly what's out there and what to expect. What do I hope to get out of this?...

My ultimate aim is to be mentored by a full-time trader. I really do believe that there are many full-time traders who would like to mentor someone (particularly if they trade from home). But I can equally see how it could be a bit of a gamble for that person, spending their valuable time and effort with someone who, for any number of possible reasons, may never be successful. I'm sure there are traders who may wish to test new ideas, or would like to know if their results are replicatable by someone else, or just like guide someone along the path they have taken whist pointing out the places they have stumbled along the way. I like learning how to learn, and as a result, know the true value of spending time with someone who knows what they are doing. As most people probable realise, nearly all learning occurs at a subconscious level. If any traders have thought about mentoring someone, in whatever capacity, I would most welcome even just a chat. You never know What might result. I know I get immense pleasure helping people in any way I can, and I'm pretty sure most people feel the same.

Anyway, the best proxy [for having a mentor] for this, that I can think of, is getting into a trading firm. I'll put up my list of firms I plan to head along in my next post. Any comments, tips, suggestions, or guidance on what I am doing, or about the firms I will be visiting would be most appreciated.

I'm not out to be spoon-fed. I've got a Masters degree (not that it makes a succeful trader - but at least it demonstrates I can stick to something). I am no stranger to effort and diligence. I'm not just sitting in my room starting threads like, '....how much can I earn?...', or '...is getting into a firm just luck?...'. I'm leaving in, ooooh, 1 and 1/2 hours for this (spending a few days with relatives in Scotland first though :)).

I'd love it if there is anyone who would like to meet up, or even have a chat on the phone, and would like to give a little guidance, or more, on my (might I add, slightly daunting) journey. Let's see what true powers the almighty community that is T2W can actually achieve... :p.

Thank you all,

Magnus

p.s. I will be aways from any computers for the next day or so (travelling, obviously :p), so might not be able to reply to any posts, PMs, or emails right away - but will see if I can access something...

Magnuis,

That's the spirit, mate.

A word of caution. If you're in any of pubs frequented by members of the House of Lords, don't wear a kilt (too much temptation).

I wish you well, and Good Luck,

Grant.

Yes...

Noted grant. Top information!Thank you!!...

About an hour or so to go... Very excite!!

Magnus

Wow. Well, good luck. If you don't ask and all that...

And you may have access due to the large number of wifi spots, not to mention internet cafes...

Cheers...

Cheers shadowninja. Really appreciated (y)

I've been reading T2W for a lot longer than I've been posting. It's a great community and the members have helped me a lot. Hopefully I can give something back as I progress :)

Magnus

p.s. only 15 minutes 'til I'm off :p

How long is this journey going to take??? I've just had another look at your map and from the footprints it seems you plan on moving a few million years along the evolutionary timeline!

Backwards, you mean?
a scot:)

When he returns home, he'll be a babe magnet - seducing all the women with tales of mysterious London town. In a Scottish accent: "You keep away from that Magnus , my lassie, he's trouble. No doubt he'll be smoking a pipe next". "Och, don't worry father, I've got two pairs of knickers on."

Update...

Had a meeting with a recruiter today. The recruiter deals with oil and energy trading companies. Hopefully get some response from some companies they are sending my CV to... :)

Did get some good advice though - among it was advice about tests that companies are [more and more] getting interviewees to sit.

Going to get some books tomorrow on numerical and verbal-reasoning testing. Be like studying for exams all over again. Fun Fun Fun :p

Magnus,

Re verbal reasoning. Degrees aren't awarded to those who lack reasoning skills.

Your essays at uni were marked on ability to interpret and present facts/views/arguments into a coherent, logical response, ie your reasoning abilities.

Forget reading about reasoning - you don't need it, and it can’t be learnt in a few days (maybe a couple of years).

If you’re degree was in Pure Maths, then I’m stuck re essay assessment criteria (or should that be criterion?).

I wouldn’t depend on Recruiters, they know Jack and care less despite any impression to the contrary. Depend on your own skills and judgement (and suggestions from T2W).

Hope everything is going well.

Grant.

Okay, maybe I don't actually know what verbal reasoning is after all. Hmmmm... Gonna have to Google...

The recruiter recommended practicing verbal reasoning and numeracy. From what you say, verbal reasoning is natural/learnt over time - so maybe nothing can be done there. Numeracy however I do think can be practiced - get familiar with the right frame of mind required.

"suggestions from T2W" - it's helped me thus far :)...

Cheers Grant,

Magnus

Heard on the Street by Falcon was a great help to me...not that I have a job, but It prepared me for the numerical, logic and actual interview better than any other book I've used.

Thank you...

Thank you chocolate13.

Great to know what works. I'll hit-up Borders today, see if they have it.

It's about getting every little edge (bit like trading really :p)...

Cheers,

Magnus

Yuppie,

Try Amazon.co.uk - you'll probably get it a lot cheaper, possibly very cheap for a secondhand copy.

Cheers Grant. Will probably do that. Amazon does usually turn out to be the cheapest. Although, sometimes what you get can be a bit different...

Like this onetime... I ordered John Carter's Mastering the Trade (with I found to be a very good book - mainly for the way he describes how he structures his life around trading and also for his information on writing a trading plan) 2nd-hand from Amazon. Described as, '"as new" condition...... The first 119 pages, EVERY ONE OF THEM, were covered (and I mean covered!!) in chinese writing... :-0... That book was sent straight back!!... This was a one-off for me though as I've ordered loads of books 2nd-hand off Amazon and all have been very good... well, dirt cheap actually :D...

I'm considering changing the direction of my journey... I have just been offered a job working offshore... 2 weeks on - 2 weeks off... How much will it slow my progress of becoming a full-time trader, if I'm only doing it every 2 weeks for 2 weeks at a time?... It's something I'm not taking lightly at all... It's a great opportunity, but I fear it may detract from my core goal of trading full-time...

Hmmmmm.... Life is never straight-forward.... Does anyone have any personal thoughts, experiences, or such on attaining goals, particularly with regard to trading full-time?... :)

Cheers,

Magnus
