It's reasonably easy to conceive of a world where these idiots make trading effectively impossible (I am not saying this is likely) e.g. designate a government market maker in shares and bonds quoting a 5% spread, introduce bretton woods style fixed fx rates and ban derivatives... what will you do then?

As much as my answer was said in jest, I would actually do something similar - just sort of drift my way around the world, like a Nomad. The idea of it appeals to me.

Sailing around the world eh...I'll be your first mate any time Gecko.

Unless you're not a virgin, then I'll be your second or third mate. I doubt it can be much higher than that.

:) you mean like it was when i started 30+ years ago - no problem just widen your timeframe and sit back in your rocking chair all day while the computer gathers dust.

Is overcoming a 5% spread impossible?

I think it would actually make things easier and we'd all start making money at this game.

Whatever limits they put on trading, I would find a way to profit from it unless they literally banned all buying and selling altogether.

I also believe the above scenario may happen soon.

It was just a hypothetical question man! I think you might need a chill pill.

Try thinking of your happy place. I'm currently dreaming about white beaches and Summer Glau.

Guess I'd do all those mysterious things that Arabian and the tax man want to know about

This isn't the first time I've heard this type of question asked recently. Just my luck if the options to trade runout just when I'm begining to make some headway. It'll make the world a far dulller place. Not just for traders but for everyone. Little do they know....
I'm reading Atlas Shrugged at the moment. It reads almost more like a commentary on how the world is becoming rather than fiction.
scary stuff
