Disgraceful. I want the scoop on Coronation street, not bleeding eastenders!

In seriousness though, people are more interested in celebrity news etc than things like war.

Personally, im interested in neither, and haven't watched the news or read a newspaper (apart from the occasional sports section) in years and years.

The way of the world I'm afraid.

The most prominent story on the Mail website (accompanied by large picture) is about a former weather girl of dubious character being somewhat underweight.

The Times meanwhile gives greater prominence to the tawdry scribblings of a many times disgraced Labour politician whose odiousness is beyond the comprehension of normal people.

Because it is not news rathcoole (emphasis on the new part). It (or something similar) has been going on for almost a decade, and hundreds of UK soldiers have died. And it will happen again next month or next week, and the time after that.

Of our troops: their abuse, under-equiping of, use for political ends and dependence on their decency, skill, sense of duty and loyalty is a disgrace. But it was ever thus. It amazes me that of these young (often teenage) lads who die, some people appear to think it's for a worthwhile cause.

How it all contrasts with some of our slimy politicians.

An earlier generation of politicians had in many cases served in the military during wartime, and at least knew (or had some idea of) what they were letting the forces in for, and why they were, in general, in no hurry to start new wars.

Those were also the days of high-ranking miltary commanders of independent means and integrity who didn't depend on the nod of a politician for their pension or next step up[ the ladder.

Well fine, but it was also the days of Douglas Haigh so let's not wax too lyrical.

We could learn something from the good old days though... Remember what happened to that Admiral in Candide? I'm thinking that with political types.

Sure - point well made. But in period since WW2 some measly minded high-ranking military pseuodo politicians were more swayed by their pension and career prospects than what was the correct military course / policy.

Personally, I'm a great fan of Dr. Strangelove and G&S's "Ruler of the Queen's Navy"

Not really, because I haven't heard that for months.

Heard some prat on TV today saying that Tiger had hurt the game of golf.

FFS, the guy just shagged a dozen or so whores, that's all.

Good for him.

He didn't kill anybody.

Psssht, it's just yank puritainism, that's the issue. And I reckon there's a bit of an undercurrent of racism there as well, although I can't prove it.

Enjoying seeing them all in a tizzy about this polanski thing though. As if anyone should be extradited to a country that is so hot for torture.

Yes, the Yanks are somewhat rabid in their pursuit of what they call justice.

Just look at their pursuit of Gary McKinnon .. some pillock over there said they want him to fry.

He only hacked into the Pentagon computers .. they should offer the guy the job of Head of Security instead.

All gary mckinnon did was enter servers which weren't password protected

Exactly, garry mckinnon is about as much of a "hacker" as someone making a shortcut to "C:\" on a windows 98 machine.
