All these noises coming out of our politicians and economists backsides about the slowing pace of decline of the economies reminds me of a film with Rock Hudson, about a submarine under the ice in the Arctic.

The torpedoroom got flooded and the sub started to sink. 700 feet, 800, 900, 950, 1000, 1025. "It's slowing!" Somebody says, "if we can just get her to rise before the pressure, at 40 tons per square foot, crushes the hull"

The point was. There was nothing that could be done except hope. The hull had never been tested at that depth, before.

There is nothing to cheer about---we are still going down. Can we take the extra pressure?

We are still spending money (which we haven't got) in the hope that in six months we will be paying it back.

Spain's Zapatero has just awarded 420 Euros per month, for six months, to those on unemployment benefit. Guess what? Those who were on unemployment benefit, but had expired before August 1, are not considered eligible and don't get it. They are the majority of the unemployed! Did he think that they would stay silent? Six months payment, at 420 pm, to millions of unemployed people.

That is the kind of panicky, not thought through, thinking that we are getting from our leaders. Patch the leaking hull and hope for the best. What's he going to do in six months time? Just stop it like that? I know one thing. Spain's boat is well behind most of the other European neighbours in the recuperation race.

I don't think that all of us are going to drown, but I'm afraid that a lot are.

What they don't like to say is the old capitalist democratic economies are senile like General Motors - jobs are being lost every day to the bric countries - thanks to Gordon Dump and the rest of the useless politicos

I guess he is trying to stimulate their economy by giving money to spend. Well if he was in the USA he would have given the rich yet more money - I mean how can you spend so much ? and had an expensive PR campaign about the American Dream !! That satisfies the 90% who haven't got much !! What a load of suckers :(

In another location in the Battle of the Atlantic, Gordo is on one of those 2-man (him & Mandy) midget submarines that they used in WW2 to slip under the anti-sub nets.

Ist Officer MandleBlower knows they are stuffed because the nets extend right down to the seabed. Captain FlashGordo hopes they can find a chink in the nets to get through. The other problem is that the sub's batteries are nearly exhausted and there's no recharging facility available. Also, they have to surface to recharge and if they do that it will become obvious that the game's up.

Admiral Cameron's Flagship is subhunting from the surface and keeps lobbing depth charges overboard. It doesn't look good for Captain Flash who, as a young Lieutenant, saved up to be able to join up so that he could gain a bit of glory. There's only one escape apparatus on board the midget sub and it's in the rear seat with MandleBlower who's hanging on to it.

Perhaps if Captain Flash goes down with his ship he will get a posthumous award of some kind?

It is probably significantly higher up than the UK. I have never seen and heard of so many of my friends and colleagues who have lost their jobs and been completely unable to find quality work. They are now having to decide whether to pursue a career in McDonalds or Burger King. The real level of unemployment in the UK is probably around 6 million and we now pay out more in benefits that we get in income tax which is unsustainable.

We have the highest level of Public Spending in the entire G20 nations and is over 50% of GDP which is again unsustainable. The budgeted spending plans were all based on a 3.5% decline in GDP this year with a nonsensical bounce up of 3.5% next year. What has now been realised is that the decline is going to be at least 5.5% this year with a continuation of decline next year.

This means that the new government that will take office in June 2010 will have no option but to slash Public Spending on an enormous scale and ramp up tax. We could see another 1 million losing their jobs at a time when we will likely be burdened with huge rises in direct and indirect taxes.

I know this sounds negative but that is what you get when you kill all your manufacturing and have an economy based on house price inflation and financial services both of which have collapsed and at a time where banks are deliberately withdrawing money supply.

In my view if people think things are bad now just wait until Autumn 2010.

I don't know, Paul, time will tell. I'm not saying that the UK is not as bad as you say but Spain is at the mercy of the other nations as far as manufacturing is concerned. International companies won't do anything in Spàin without a good handout from the government and it is common knowledge that with construction and tourism going south and uncontrolled immigration coming north, we have serious problems over here.

The difference with our government is that it will not admit that there is a problem.

Now, I don't know how much debt Spain has but I do know that, if the UK position is dire, then the Spanish one is worse!

The unfortunate thing about this is that, IMO, like the UK, we do not have a good alternative government.

No doubt the greedy pig brigade will give fellow piggy Gordo a peerage and a big fat pension - for a lousy job done !!

Bring back the Star Chamber and relieve these incompetents of their huge salaries, perks and pensions imho

My wife does budgets within the NHS. She's already been told to prepare......

What's the betting that new Prime Minister "Dave" will give Mandelblower a job as special advisor or whatever, in a "government of all the talents" (ho ho). Now he wears ermine, he doesn't even have to be re-elected in order to "serve". I suppose he's had so much practice in going down, he has become accomplished in coming up again.

My relation working at the BBC was given strict instructions by the top brass not to refer to his unholiness as Mandy !! and definately NOT as Randy Mandy, even if he has control of the country.
