How do you feel about "Big Brother"?

BIG BROTHER IS SHOUTING AT YOU

‘Talking’ CCTV to be installed
http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/display.var.1310418.0.talking_cctv_to_be_installed.php

These are the latest examples of how some people consider that Britain/the world is turning into a surveillance society, with "Big Brother" watching over us.

What is Big Brother?
Big Brother is the nominal leader of Oceania in Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell's chilling dystopic novel. The name is now used to mean surveillance in general, usually by a government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Brother_(1984)

Other new phenomenon have been likened to the umbrella term "Big Brother" such as National ID cards & microchips embedded in your dustbin which automatically weigh the amount of rubbish you produce - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/breakfast/5404528.stm

In general, How do you feel about Big Brother?

Detest it.

You can't even have a sprinkle in a side street these days.

Personally, I think CCTV is a good thing if it helps prevent crime & helps capture offenders, whether this is to stop drunks fighting on a Friday night in busy town centres, or to prosecute those involved in such incidents.

If talking CCTV can help prevent crime further, I don't see this as being bad.

I think that speed cameras are a good idea, as they have generally made me drive slower, and think much more about my driving.

ID cards, phone tapping, GPS tracking, Genetic info on passports - I've just voted "all for it" - until I consdered the risk of being caught taking a **** on the way home from the pub.

How do I change my vote?

;)

I don't mind at all now I'm a mature father ;) don't tinkle in bushes anymore or climb lamposts etc.

Did anyone see that program the other day about crims... it said that all of the crimes in the UK are committed by 100000 people!! To boot they are usually re-offenders aswell. Have I got this correct or did I misshear? That to me says it all.

Great thread JT

unfortunately there wasn't an option for "stick camera's everywhere, catch all the crims and then burn them alive".

Edit - pissing on the way home from the pub should be legalised, obviously.

Getting a bit off-topic away from the modern meaning of "Big Brother", but here's a famous extract from George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four - http://www.george-orwell.org/1984/20.html
You are improving. Intellectually there is very little wrong with you. It is only emotionally that you have failed to make progress. Tell me, Winston -- and remember, no lies: you know that I am always able to detect a lie -- tell me, what are your true feelings towards Big Brother?'

'I hate him.'

'You hate him. Good. Then the time has come for you to take the last step. You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him: you must love him.'

He released Winston with a little push towards the guards.

'Room 101,' he said.

"I think that speed cameras are a good idea, as they have generally made me drive slower, and think much more about my driving."...you just carry on driving slower if that floats your boat...I'm the blur having a good time..they can bury my tickets with me... on my headstone .."he's going slower now"...
perhaps they'd like to put a camera in my bedroom as well to make sure I am only doing the recommended number of strokes per minute ...wouldn't want me to run the risk of an heart attack now would we...

The b*****ds even want to control what we eat.

Maybe it will become obligatory to have CCTV in our kitchens and dining rooms.

.......and the loo so they can check if we are creating too much waste........

6400 metres @ 28-32 spm, set the friction halfway, thats should get a wet patch on your t-shirt. :)

good training guides on there, and world challenges, anyone got a ranking on it?

"I think that speed cameras are a good idea, as they have generally made me drive slower, and think much more about my driving."...y

Although on speed cameras, it is possible to argue that time & attention spent by drivers looking out for speed cameras, double-checking speed/slamming on the breaks near speeds cameras etc. etc. instead of watching the road, may create danger and cancel out some of the benefits of speed cameras....

"6400 metres @ 28-32 spm, set the friction halfway, thats should get a wet patch on your t-shirt. "

10,000 @28-30 rpm .top resistance 10 ...good warm up ;)

"10,000 @28-30 rpm .top resistance 10 ...good warm up " ...the last bit was BS ..I used to have this in my stamina program though 4 times a week for 4 weeks , but it wrecked me doing me it ...longggg way past a "warm up"...LOL
