Is it possible to say that one of the last areas that Labour have failed to screw up on is the issue of who will succeed Blair to lead the party?....if so could we agree to top off the show they could perhaps elect John Prescott in that role ?....can we imagine it a world in which the UK / US alliance is spearheaded by George Bush and John Prescott... I confess this appeals to my sense of the ridiculous...on a more pragmatic note I could see how this could work ...George starts the wars , but secures public support by having John on the front line throwing the first punches under the joint edict....you can't say we don't lead from the front....

What is the role of the Deputy PM if not to takeover from/succeed the PM if the need arises?

Surely Prescott was made Deputy PM as the labour party decided that if anything happened to bring about the end of Tony's leadership, Prescott is the next best man for the job ;) :?:

No JT, many people don't realise this, but John Prescott is not really the Deputy PM ,they amended the role specifically for him with the in- the-'know title...... Prime Ministers Bouncer !

To fulfil an old deal with the unions. Blair couldn't have got the leadership after the sudden death of John Smith without having Prescott on board as his "running-mate". I suspect that the deal was "Let me lead the party and John Prescott will be Deputy PM for as long as I'm PM". This was perhaps the best deal the unions could get.

If Prescot & Bush (nice music hall connotation there) were running anything, how would they decide
which mouth to put their feet in?

Observations on UK life.......changes since 1997

To mention but a few...........

University Students graduate owing an average of £11,830, up from £5,792 when Labour came to power, according to the survey of more than 1,200 students. - http://education.independent.co.uk/news/story.jsp?story=552592

Young people are faced with the prospect of not being able to get on the housing ladder as the house price boom has gone so far, and there is no proof that it will reverse. Their only alternatives are to rent property (dead money) or live with parents until around the age of 50.

"Hyper-inflation" on counci tax in many regions.

People are faced with the prospect of not being able to retire until at least the age of 70.

Don't want to depress anyone, moan or blame everything on the government. But who feels that life is better in the UK now than it was before the 1997 election?

Cheers

JT,
"People are faced with the prospect of not being able to retire until at least the age of 70."...well this obviously does not apply to the crowd voting on general chat..wow they're going to be taking a cold one on a beach by the end of the year...and in between popping the the top off the bottle and taking the first glug they are probably going to be making the gargantuan effort of clicking the trade button that sends further countless lucre tumbling wayward towards their bank account or maybe we should call that a piggy bank...."piggy" as in porkers ;)

define 'better' ....I sometimes wonder if there is some type of converse relationship between whinging and wealth...you know , the more wealth people accumulate the more they have to compensate by whinging because their life did not get 'better' ....is this 'deep' or what...Chumps' new Law of Psychology available on CD entitled 'Whinge your way to wealth'..
