Answers on a postcard. Prolly take a couple of years, maybe more. Willing to skip the states.

Markets ain't going anywhere, my youth is.

You only live once. If it's something you have been itching to do and you have the money and means, then go for it. So many people will never get to experience life for many reasons. It's a rat race, if you can find the exit go to it my friend!

Willing compromise on the states and Australia largely because of the culture overlap. NZ stays because of the scenery.

When I say compromise, I don't mean "wouldn't touch it with yours", I mean visiting as means to an end.

(also have family in Orange County / Austin / Toronto)

Shouldn't you have thought of this before you had a family?
You know who I'm talking about ;)

Go for it. You're not getting any younger and maybe you'll meet a nice thai/filipino wife.

Well that is about a year away from now, I doubt I'd make it that far that soon tbh. Something to bear in mind though, thanks for the tip off.

anybody here done anything like this?

No, but me and the girlfriend (now wife) got the real travelling bug in late 80's-early 90's, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand...then she got pregnant with our first (we'd booked time off for Aus, N.Z., H.K. and the Cook Isles..doh) and it put a lid on it. Funny thing is you mention the market/s is/are going nowhere, at the time we travelled we lost out on absolutely nowt in the UK, iirc as a group of mates we were all in neg equity, all paying 10%+ on mortgages, 'kin debt slaves...rinse and repeat...

But it's kinda different now, and here's the thing for you, you can trade and travel, swing/position trade a few pairs, or the indices/oil...

tbh we all have dreams and mine is (I reckon) modest and achievable; to make enough (disposable) money to buy a high spec 52" Jeanneau, travel all over the med for 6 months of the year and trade off it whilst in harbour...I'm 45 now and I hope to be debt free and achieve it before I'm 50..:)

I wouldn't trade at all, prefer to do the travelling well rather than be average at both.

Sort of

I worked/played my way around the world a long time ago and had fun.

Broadens the mind

May I ask how long it took?

I don't have a 'take a gap year, go to australia and work in a bar' sorta thing in mind, I would want to do it properly... something I could write a book about perhaps.

Write a book about your travels? I can't think why people would want to read it unless you get kidnapped and tortured.

6 years

good idea about the book.

I went to Uni in NZ and then on from there

hmm... do those 6 years include the 3 (?) at uni? And 3yrs full on travelling after that? 3 yrs I can handle, 6 would be a stretch.

re: book - it was a passing thought. And I do not fancy getting kidnapped or tortured, but I suppose it would be possible to incorporate some non-standard parametric that might make it book-able. Doing it like the Dice Man, or dressed in drag, something like that.

"Round the world in 80 <<insert word that rhymes with "days" here >>?"

"Round the World in 80 Cabaret's"

I have to write a Cabaret act and perform it live at 80 different venue's around the world.

Looks like I'm not the only green one here.

I don't follow.

A better idea is get a dartboard with a map and throw a dart and wherever the dart lands that's where you go. You could adapt it for a rodent and where it defecates and so on, but using some form of random selection to decide where you go would be interesting.

read The Dice Man, it's a great book.

The problem with that is 1) it takes time to sort out visa's etc, I don't think you can just turn up at each and every border and expect things to go smoothly, and 2) I might end up going to sh!t places.

Of course "round the world in 80 trades" would be great but I missed that boat.

Already read it, there's a 2nd book too which I didn't read.

1) Some places are a bit more complex but you can get visas and stuff sorted out from the embassy, just it might take a few weeks. Obviously some places won't be possible North korea but generally it should be ok.

2) That's the whole point of it. One month you might be bathing in the sun on the beach in st lucia and the next month you're heading off to Alaska.
