With Bank share prices now being extremely low, is it a good time to invest in them or should I wait for a while until they show some signs of recovery?

Bear this in mind:
You will find throughout time people constantly saying to invest in banks, this goes from when they were at there last lows to when they were at there highs, when they slipped a little people said then was a good time to buy, then it slipped a lot and people said it was a bargain and couldn't possibly go any lower, now we are in a meltdown with new words being invented daily for the state we're in and yet people are still saying now is the time to buy.
So far I have heard sayings like, credit crunch, credit problems, no credit and to the absurd sayings of credit meltdown, credit disaster and credit wake.
What next, nuclear credit, credit fallout, credit oblivion, I dont know but in all this you will still find someone saying that now is the time to buy banks.
After you hear them say this, you quote them later on when the price has tanked or the banks gone bust and they say something along the lines of:
If bank went bust: Spread your portfolio
If price went down: Hold for the long term.
Dont worry if the price goes up, you'll soon here from them how they called it right, hail the next messiah.

This is key advice for anyone whose thought processes go no deeper than to think that a share is good value just because its price is lower than it used to be. There are many good reasons why a share price could be low, and for the purposes of offering us a good value investment is not one of them.
