New York - One night only....

I'm shortly ending my working life with a short business trip to the states, followed by a day / night in New York.

Given such a short time for such a big city, what would you suggest are the must do / see things I should consider?

I'm planning a helicopter ride around the city.

What next?

Staten Island ferry ride past the Statue of Liberty. It might even be free?
Empire State Building - go to top of.
NY Knicks game at Madision Square Garden? Else NY Rangers NHL game.
Walk round central Park.
Walk round Manhattan.
Short Walk over Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn & Queens from Manhattan?
Harlem & Bronx (Zoo), are a short journey on the Metro from Manhattan?
Buy day passes for the Metro system.
Manhattans China Town (Canal Street) - fake rolexes etc.

Generally can't go wrong walking round Manhattan, taking in the sights, sampling the food, admiring the fit birds that will be on show 👍. Who knows, speak to one or 2 locals & you might get lucky! Even better, hit a club or 2....😉😆.

:!: You might be that way inclined & i have nothing against them, but am not one myself. I walked through Mannhattans Chelsea village alone, and was "approached" by 2 or 3 "friendly" men within the space of an hour or so, for reasons i didn't really want to think about 😎😱😆.

Can't believe JT missed out Wall Street on his list!!! Just up from the NYSE is the famous bronze bull. If Mrs. blades accompanies you, she'll want to have her photo taken polishing his 'privates', so have a camera at the ready. At least, that's what all the female tourists seemed to want to do when we were there. I can confirm that the Staten Island ferry is free - as are the two gun boats that escort you! If you do go to the Empire State (highly recommended) - book online before you leave the U.K as it'll save you loads of time on the day. Also, go VERY early in the morning, Mrs. timsk and I went at 8.30am and didn't queue at all. If you want to eat the very best hamburger that NY has on offer, let me know and I'll dig out the details of how to find the place which is impossible unless you already know where it is! The Guggenheim is great - a real must, while MoMA is disappointing and the Whitney is a total waste of time.

5th Avenue (top shopping, top names, top prices)...

Central Park...

Times Square (BIG LIGHTS, used to be really seedy, low level hookers, dirty stretched drugs, haha, but now its been really sanitized with big name companies and normal shops, in other words, maybe quite boring depending on taste)...

China Town...

Little Italy...

Greenwich Village...

As for restaurants / bars, check this out:

Zagat Survey ? Restaurants, Nightlife, Hotels & Attractions ? Ratings and Reviews

They are usually pretty reputable and up to date with whats hot / what's not.

I've done the same - one of the best things I ever did. You don't "retire" - we're all too young (in mind!) for that - I just told them all that I was "having a change of lifestyle".

Also - Grand central station/terminal? is worth a look if you happen to pass - remember the Untouchables film, nice decorations etc. I passed it but didn't look. NY public library might be just across the street from there?
