Market Maker - what and how?

Hi,

Anyone got personal experience of market making? How do I become one? I graduated in summer, applied for numerous equity research jobs (rejected) and I am now extremely fed up. I will be taking my first CFA exam in one month, and the topic of market making came up in one of my books. It sounds interesting, hence this thread.

Market making is not what it used to be...when there were nice large spreads in stocks or options you could make a nice living. Now it is all automated and the human being is just an operator...do not get me wrong, being a market maker is hard and requires fast thinking on your feet...BUT it is not the way to go if you want to be a player.

Since you are studying for your CFA, you obviously have some sophistication...try on focus on finding an entry level trading position or trading support position or research position. Once you are in the door, it is a lot easier to move (as long as you are on the trading side).
