Directors granted options

Hello,

In this statement below from Ocado what does this mean ;

''(the "Directors") were granted an option over shares in the Company with a nil exercise price''

And does this statement basically mean Duncan Tatton-Brown was given 1 million shares ? If so why did he buy 147 k worth on the same day ?
