An Easy-to-Understand List of the Major Exchanges

Being a newbie myself, I compiled the following list of exchanges for my own reference, but thought I'd post it here in case other newbies find it useful.

I listed all the major exchanges (hope I haven't missed any) which trade commodities, futures & options, and stocks. There are many more exchanges globally than those listed below, but I focused primarily on those which are of use to a UK-based trader.

Experienced traders, please inform me if I've made a mistake, or omitted important information, and I'll modify this post.


U.S. Exchanges


(All times given are GMT)


NYSE - New York Stock Exchange, based in New York. The largest stock exchange in the world.

Trading hours: 2.30pm - 9pm

All stocks traded on the NYSE are listed in the NYSE Composite index (NYSE: NYA), which includes over 2,000 stocks, of which over 1,600 are from United States corporations and over 360 are foreign listings.

NYMEX (NMX) - New York Mercentile Exchange, based in New York. The world's largest physical commodity futures exchange.

Trading hours: 1pm - 10.15pm

* Heating oil
* Natural gas
* Palladium
* Platinum
* Propane
* Uranium

COMEX division

* Aluminum
* Copper
* Gold
* Silver

NYBOT - A physical commodity futures exchange located in New York City.

Trading hours: 12.55pm - 9.15pm

Commodities traded:

* Cocoa
* Coffee
* Cotton
* Pulp (wood pulp)
* Sugar (domestic)
* Sugar (world)
* Orange juice (frozen concentrate)

NASDAQ (NDAQ) - An entirely electronic stock exchange based in New York City. The full form is National Association of Securities and Dealers Automated Quotation. With approximately 3,700 companies and corporations, it has more trading volume than any other stock exchange in the world.

Trading hours: 2.30pm - 9pm

AMEX - NYSE Amex Equities, situated in New York, formerly known as the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) is an American stock exchange, which also trades options and ETFs.

Out of the three major American stock exchanges, the AMEX is known to have the most liberal policies concerning company listing, as most of its companies are generally smaller compared to the NYSE and NASDAQ. The Amex also specialises in the trading of ETFs, and hybrid/structured securities. The majority of U.S. listed ETFs are traded at the AMEX including the SPDRs and most PowerShares.

CME (CME) - The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (often called "the Chicago Merc," or "the Merc") is an American financial and commodity derivative exchange based in Chicago. Like CBOT (below), it is a part of CME Group Inc.

CME trades several types of financial instruments: interest rates, equities, currencies, and commodities. It also offers trading in alternative investments such as weather and real estate derivatives.

CME has the largest options and futures contracts open interest (number of contracts outstanding) of any futures exchange in the world.

Trading hours: 3pm - 11pm

CBOT - Based in Chicago, the Chicago Board of Trade specialises in trading more than 50 different options and futures contracts

Trading hours: 2pm - 10.30pm

U.K. Exchanges



LSE - The London Stock Exchange is a stock exchange located in London and is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world. It lists over 3000 companies, with many overseas listings as well as British companies.

Trading hours: 8am - 4.30pm

LME - The London Metal Exchange or LME is the futures exchange with the world's largest market in options, and futures contracts on base and other metals. As the LME offers contracts with daily expiry dates of up to three months from trade date, along with longer-dated contracts, it also allows for cash trading.

Note: Contrary to popular belief, the precious metals, gold and silver, are not traded on the London Metal Exchange, but on the over-the-counter (OTC) market usually referred to as the London Bullion Market (LBMA), which is not an exchange.

Trading hours: 11.45am - 5pm

Asian/Pacific Exchanges



HKSE (HKEX) - The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is the stock exchange of Hong Kong. The exchange has predominantly been the main exchange for Hong Kong where shares of listed companies are traded. It is Asia's third largest stock exchange in terms of market capitalisation.

Trading hours: 2am - 8am

SSE - The Shanghai Stock Exchange is a Chinese stock exchange or bourse that is based in the city of Shanghai. At the end of 2007, the Shanghai Stock Exchange had 860 listed companies with a combined market capitalization of US$3.95 trillion, making it the largest in China and second largest in the world.

Note: Unlike the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the Shanghai Stock Exchange is still not entirely open to foreign investors due to tight capital account controls exercised by the Chinese mainland authorities.

Trading hours: 1.30am -7am

TSE - The Tokyo Stock Exchange, located in Tokyo, Japan, is the second largest stock exchange in the world by aggregate market capitalization of its listed companies, second only to the New York Stock Exchange. It has around 2500 listings.

Trading hours: 12am - 6am

ASX - The Australian Securities Exchange is the primary stock exchange in Australia. Trading is all-electronic and the exchange is a public company, listed on the exchange itself. It is the 9th largest stock exchange in the world.

The ASX trades in stocks, futures & options, and ETFs/ETCs.

Trading hours: 12am - 6am
