I am considering Interactive Brokers at the moment. They seem to have the lowest commissions, a good advanced platform (TWS) and a more basic one I can learn on (Mosaic). I can also code Java into this, which is something I am interested in doing in the future.

Thanks for your reply! I was asking because I have heard that I would have to employ a bank to 'hold' my US securities because I am not an American? But I am not sure as to why that would be required to be honest.
