Chris - have you tried adding a Parabolic SAR to your chart? This can be used as a trailing stop whilst the market is trending, though it won't work when the market is rangebound.

I successfully day trade the Dow using only SMA's and achieve an average profit of 50+ points per day. It may not be the best strategy, but it is simple to understand and works for me.

Yes Finspreads would be good, but also check Capital Spreads as they offer tighter spreads, although they don't always fill at the price on screen.
Given that you only need to make £40 per day it shouldn't be too difficult. I daytrade Wall Street Cash with CS and average over 50 points per day...
