    Beginner- recommend book?

Many excellent books, depends on what your plans and goals are, e.g. short term forex trades, or long-term equity investments, commodities, etc. I trade equities (mostly AIM and TSX stocks) and recommend Peter Lynch's 'One up on Wall Street'. For more depth, Graham's "The Intelligent...

Best way to deal with a string of losses

Try investing in stocks instead. I consider myself pretty smart but wouldn't bother with Forex as there's no clear logic behind it. I have been pretty succesful with stocks but Forex just feels like gambling, and I suspect most people will ultimately lose trying to play that game. In the 15...

    Tax Havens

Let's suppose Bob is a British guy who is living in the USA. He opens a brokerage account in the USA and invests $10k in a Microcap company which ten-bags. He wants to bank the profit, but realizes he is going to be taxed 30% by federal withholding as a non-US citizen and then additional state...

How do I break a bad trading habit?

Probably comes down to you maybe not being entirely sure why it was a buy at the lower price. If you knew that, you'd be able to tell if it is still a buy at a higher or lower price. Can you explain to youtself concisely why it was a sell at $11 and a buy at $12 a month later? Try writing it...

    AIM order not being filled?

wackypete, sounds reasonable. I will try talking to the broker about letting me break it up into several smaller purchases without paying multiple commissions... I just ordered an L2 service which will hopefully help for tomorrow. I figure it will probably pay for itself on this purchase alone.

    AIM order not being filled?

I have been trying all afternoon to buy some shares in a penny stock on AIM without any luck. Currently it looks like: - Bid is 1.05 and Offer 1.20p. Volume today has been approx. 330,000. Typical buying volumes of 20,000 to 83,000. Typical buying prices of 1.125p to 1.188p I have been...

    Oil and Oil stocks

Also in XEL since last week. Enjoying the rise but don't want greed to ruin a sensible exit strategy. I suspect there may be some retracing tomorrow followed by very volatile trading after news / during drilling. Any thoughts Mike?

    Apple.. a rising firework?

If forced to choose a long-term position I would short Apple. This is because of its P/E ratio of 14.3. That's not particularly high, but it means it would take 14.3 years of earnings at the current level for Apple to repay you the price you paid for a share. That's a long time for a...

Tips for buying wide bid/ask spread illiquid stock

CT, ah yes that probably looks confusing. To clarify, I am in the US and was initially buying $4000 USD worth of the US holdings company which trades at 1.8 cents an 2.0 cents -- not p, that's a force of habit as I am from the UK. I gave up last week after the spread increased to 1.8 c/2.5 c...

    Gold Investment

1oz of gold will be 1oz of gold a million years from now. why would you 'invest' in something that is not aspiring to grow?

    Apple.. a rising firework?

Needless to say, right now they are dominating and have an absurd amount of cash in bank. No clear signs that they are losing favour among consumers. Hard to predict how long they can keep it up. Personally, I would rather stay away and play with more predictable companies which don't need a...

Tips for buying wide bid/ask spread illiquid stock

After calling several US brokers, I eventually learned that Fidelity allows AIM trades over the phone. Will stop playing these ridiculous games with the MM now. Hopefully funds transfer over to Fidelity by the end of next week and I can buy the liquid shares then. Wasn't exactly my plan to...

Tips for buying wide bid/ask spread illiquid stock

Well damn it, today I got a little ambitious and bought $500. The MM kept the bid at 1.8p and increased the ask from 2.0 p to 2.84p. What a complete b*****d!!! A 37% spread and the shares now cost 42% more than they did this morning.
