as far as picking a time frame, you probably should figure out what kind of trader you are first...if you need a lot of action each day, go to a lower time frame...if you are looking for less action, move up in time frame...as far as books...they can only provide ideas...you just have to plug...

i usually trade before 12pm US eastern time..and never in the late pm...just found that my trades worked better in am....usually late pm, the bonds close...which can cause some movement in the sp..people may be positioning themselves for the next day...or they are exiting their position..can...

I like what you have posted as an introduction to the thread.. I do not agree with everything you say, but I do like the idea of thinking about the market within context and also to embrace uncertainty... saying that...I still believe one has to have a "way" of entering and exiting...

Maybe many systems sold out there are no good, but this does not mean that there are no good systems sold on the internet. Yes, caveat emptor, but there are honest vendors out there who do post their verifiable results..
