    New IG API

I saw this too. I'm going to set up a REST call to take positions on equities from within the excel workbook that my DDE feed comes into. I'll happily pay the IG spread to be able to take positions instantly and without having to interact with the SB companies' half baked trading apps!

How Can You Trade Against This?

That's very reassuring to hear. I don't know whether you monitor or use volume a lot, but if so, do you have any concerns about dark pools or alternative exchanges making published volume an unreliable guide to participation?

How Can You Trade Against This?

That's an interesting point, but swaps usually involve the counterparty hedging on the underlying market, so would they not still entail stamp tax somewhere along the line? If the counterparty doesn't hedge, then how much effect will swaps have on the underlying market?

How Can You Trade Against This?

I agree. At worst it means humans can no longer take ultra short term scalping positions, and that every few years, a few of your positions might gap below your stop order a bit because of an errant algorithm. It hardly seems like the end of day trading. I do wonder though, whether, if...

How Can You Trade Against This?

How much do you have to worry about if you're trading UK equities though? Stamp tax makes HFT impossible on the primary markets.

Ways to spot mass movement of sentiment

Intraday, does anyone use relative volume?

    Best Thread Capital Spreads

Having switched to them for the 0.1% total equity spreads (which they largely honour), I haven't had any issues so far.

    Average Daily Volume

Morris thanks very much for this; provided it's real time, that could be very handy for building up a free of charge database of average values by particular times. I tested the function and it works, although getting it to refresh automatically every minute and getting the results into an...

    Average Daily Volume

The above figure is very easy to compute, but does anyone know where one could find data for the average daily volume by a certain time of day for FTSE 100 shares? This could be terribly handy for spotting momentum, but it's not available to me from either moneyam or my spreadbet providers.

Chat room for UK stock traders

This is working very well. To get this in a browser tab instead of fiddling around in MIRC, just go to: https://kiwiirc.com/client put #TRADERS as the channel, and copy the server address into the server and network dropdown. Could be a great resource I think.

Chat room for UK stock traders

I haven't used IRC for years. It's a nice simple way of instant messaging, although people may have to download an IRC client (or maybe one can access it from the web these days?). Great idea.

Chat room for UK stock traders

I only trade UK 100 equities, so I'd definitely be interested!

    Best Thread Capital Spreads

Does anyone (who regularly trades on equities) have any comments on Capital Spreads' equity spreadbets? The headline spread of 0.1% is excellent.

    Just lost £150 on IGIndex

I'm afraid it's mostly a priori! I wish there were substantial empirical evidence one could draw on for this sort of thing. I get the sense that academic researchers don't care enough about the practicalities of trading to do this sort of research. For that matter, are there any good academic...

    Just lost £150 on IGIndex

Sorry I'm going out for a Thai dinner (for which Oxford is surprisingly good), or I'd continue the discussion. I really appreciate the insight into the methodology for running stops (food for thought), although I'm still not entirely sure that your points easily apply to individual equity...
