ProRealTime? Its free for EOD data, payment required for real time data. Might be worth a look you sounds in a similar situation as myself. I was looking at ShareScope first but am still playing around with my strategy so thought it would as good a starting point as any.

For anyone interested I got a pretty prompt response from ProRealTime to advise that the FTSE 100 market was removed some time ago. The basic jist is you need to use manual lists as I previously thought although these go to a maximum of 50 entries.
