And as I'm aware of, ETFs invest in companies on the related field. So ETFs would be a good option if you want to invest in Oil for the long run.
In my case, I became a great fan of algo-trading to test out trading strategies. I still consider myself a newbie although I've been around for a few years.
I don't think you need a college degree for trading, but what I'd recommend is to paper trade with Demo practice accounts. Just my 2...

In my case, I only trade a regular forex account with them but I know they also have the spread betting option.
First you should practice with Demo accounts until you find your trading style and you know yourself better.
Then, open an small account with not too much money so you can learn to deal with your fear and greed while trading with real money.
Then keep with your strategy and keep going... grow...
