    career change

    Fair point but any decent broker (certainly one that I'd consider using) must know the basics of trading and regardless I'd still have said getting a job as a trainee with little or no experience may be a tough call at the minute. Sorry to be negative - just trying to be honest.

    Trading PC's

    Just rereading this thread I posted on ages ago. I was slightly wrong when I said 3 17" monitors was enough. Wrong - what everyone needs are dual 30" Dell monitors - they absolutely rock. Don't actually use them for trading but they are just superb. Your wife or girlfriends might leave you when...

    career change

    In the current environment I'd say pretty much forget about applying for a trainee position. Its a terrible time for even very experienced people to be applying for jobs in the financial services industry. I'd definitely recommend though: 1) Take some sort of qualification - CMA or IFA for...

    Does prop trading kill your banking career?

    If your going into prop trading already thinking about getting back into banking later I suggest you don't make the plunge in the first place. Having said that I can't think it would make any difference as long as you could explain a) why you left and b) why you failed in the prop trading firm...

    Recent developments in Investment banking/trading?

    I can think of two. Firstly the trend to try to share pools of internal liquidity both within the banks themselves and each other. Secondly the amazing growth of Commodity desks fueled by the commodities bubble. This second point would admittedly have been more relevant six months ago!

    ETF's tracking of oil price

    Hi All I'm not sure if this is the best place to post on the subject of ETF's tracking Oil so apologies if not correct... Anyway in the near future I will be in a position to invest a small amount of money. I would like to effectively tie this investment to the price of oil over the next few...

    C++ vs. C#

    Excellent post dcraig. The only two things I would add to your post are: 1) If you are planning any sort of gui frontend for your program then you would be completely mad having never programmed before to use C++/MFC. C# or Java is definitely the better way to go. I personally still find Java...

    Buying a new computer : Help

    I might be wrong but I was under the impression XP Home, Pro and Media editions are all basically the same operating system just with extra bits turned on and off? I think the issues you are really talking about are reliability and performance. Any XP based computer properly patched and with a...

    effects of bankruptcy to our economy

    Insolvency won't bother the government one bit. Companies will have insurance against just these sort of bad loans. Whats much more significant with rate rises is the raised cost of mortgage payments (albeit often offset by 6-12 months as a result of fixed/capped mortgages) raising the risk of...
