Hi there,

Im looking at getting some TA software but dont really know where to begin! I would like some software to do simple TA - ma, bands and the like, using real time data, and for it to be user friendly! Any advice? Thanks you! :)

ProRealtime..... Its free, online and very easy to use. It does have its limitations but as a beginner they probably won't affect you.......

MetaStock is the easiest to program for simple tasks, and there is a huge user forum (actually there are several of them) to help with coding and trading ideas.

How do you get the real time data for ProRealTime? And why is there the option to purchase it at nearly $1000 dollars a year if you can get it free? Looks like what im after.

MetaStock was another one I was looking at, but the RT version seems expensive?

Anything real time will be expensive I'm afraid; the question is: is it worth it?
Do a cost/benefit analysis, and if the answer is "yes", then go for it; if it is "no", then look for alternatives, like perhaps getting the data from websites such as ADVFN or MoneyAM who offer it for a cheaper fee.
Dacamic, it is much more difficult to program anything - simple or complex- in Amibroker than in MetaStock; if you are a programer, then I would strongly recommend Amibroker over MetaStock as MS is much more limited than Amibroker; otherwise go for MetaStock, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

As Rathcoole pointed out only the EOD data is free. If you only intend to trade intraday then intraday data is going to be expensive no matter what you use (unless you are willing to look at the sites of some Brokers (such as Spreadbetting firms) whom offer realtime data). Personally, I wouldn't go near them but thats just my view...

For the record I use Amibroker (although I don't use it for intraday). AB is an incredible piece of charting software for the money although its language (AFL) will take a little getting used to if you want to achieve anything slightly complicated.

In comparison Metastock is easier to pick up but IMO can become limited in what one can achieve and consequently is not worth the extra money.

The best ones for beginners is Amibroker for sure.No two ways about it.
Metastock is a legacy product,it is no doubt good but not the best by a long shot.In charting nothing comes close to Tradestation and for systems WealthLab.
