Mobile device for trading

I notice there's a number of posts on here about software to use with a PDA, but I'm actually more interested in knowing what mobile phone and/or service provider contract is best for trading.

I've recently started a 'proper' job (yes I have to work unlike some of you lucky gits :) ) and using my work laptop to do anything other than visit the BBC every now and again is a no no. So I'm considering if its worth upgrading from my super cheap mobile contract to a more expensive one, grabbing one of the new fully-featured 3G phones and using it to keep tabs on my trades, read sites like this and advfn and even execute orders on java websites like worldspreads.

Does anyone actually do this yet? I wasn't sure if any or all of the hardware, software or 3G connection were up to scratch. If so, can you suggest what devices are best? Im currently on vodafone - they have the new Blackberry Storm out (and although its a bit slow now i hear there is new firmware on the way). Any good do you think? Or is it worth going to O2 and the iPhone? List your experience of mobile phone trading below. Thanks.

I use the HTC 8925 to trade. It works great. The stylus makes navigating the charts a lot easier so an iphone probably wouldnt be a good choice. Any PDA with a good sized display, a 3G connection, and a stylus would be good

Yes, any of those HTCs can run IG's trading platform as well as MetaTrader for Windows Mobile.

My view is that if you're trading Forex then your choice really should be driven by the applications available. The iPhone is starting to see some forex charting apps available, but they are poor and don't come near the power and functionality of MetaTrader. I've used an O2 XDA running Windows Mobile 5 with IG Index and MetaTrader for 3 years now and it works like a dream. I love the iPhone, but won't switch until/if MetaTrader becomes available on that platform. Also the IG Index app has more functionality on the Windowns Mobile device than the iPhone version.

Hi,

I am currenlty tempted to buy the new HTC Touch HD for trading forex. Its big advantage is the size of the screen 3,8'' and 480 x 800 WVGA resolution. Its big disadvange seems also to be... the screen and resolution. I understand navigators are currently not adapted to this resolution and I have some fear that this could be the same for any mobile plateform forex. Does anybody has already some experience with this device to trade mobile forex?

Many thanks in advance,

Olivier

i was recently on that quest and settled for the htc touch hd. its perfect size and screen resolution.

if you prefer a keyboard then i recommend a sony ericsson Xpeira X1. 3.2 inch screen just as good.

metatrader works fine especially in landscape mode very comfortable on the eyes. my current setup is using metatrader for the chart feed and then my broker allows me access to my account online via opera mobile.

IMHO no other brokers mobile software can hold a candle to metatrader mobile.

Also as it's on orange I just use the 250MB 3g data tarrif which is more than enough per month. Plus the HD has WiFi so if you use hotspots (the cloud) you can hop onto wifi networks.

Hey! thats really good news :)

My HTC Touch HD is on its way (my X-mas pressie  )

Was a bit concerned about the 250MB limit, but good to know that it seems sufficient.
I won't be logged in the whole day anyway!

Is Opera mobile access specific to brokers? Which broker do you use if I may ask?

Cheers

The HTC ain't half expensive!!!

Anyone had any experience of trading with the Storm?

The storm doesn't run metatrader mobile or igindex mobile trader (although it probably will soon). Errors when i'm writing an email are ok, I can undo them... Errors making orders are a little more serious! I got a storm on trial and it basically does nothing as far as trading is concerned. Avoid.

Thanks for that maxey. Will most definitely avoid on the back of that!

XDA for me

No Probs, i'll be your guinea pig

Personally i'm going to do what someone else in this thread suggested... Think i'll get an XDA off ebay for around £150 (for a modern one with 3g capability). Unlimited wireless access from BT is only £20 per month - that'll do me

Cheers

thinkorswim are planning an app for the iPhone called thinkpod. Eagerly anticipated ...

Hi guyss, new to this forum (though i am thinking I am going to be a regular!!). I have the same old problem of not being able to access spread bet accounts at work because of the filter - I used shorts and longs at work but that got blocked, and cant find another provider that will get past the filter annoyingly. I am therefore looking at getting either a Samsung Omnia or a G1 mobile to trade on using something like IG Index's of Finspreads mobile platform. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I was also considering a Blackberry until I read the above...

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I have mt4 mobile version softwae on my HTC TOUCH HD mobile, which is on T-Mobile network. When I used the software by connecting the phone to computer, metatrader is working fine.

But when I tried to use MetaTrader using the mobile internet connection, meta trader is not working.

Can someone please advice me how to resolve this issue. My mobile internet works fine with Internet explorer.

Looks like some of the properties on HTC TOUCH HD mobile needs to be changed. Please advice.

Thanks for your time.

Vin

There are no error messages displayed. Simply metatrader software displaying 0.0000 information for all quotes. Please some one who has HTC TOUCH HD guide me to the end of the tunnel..Vin

Hi all, I recently bought a HTC Touch HD just for trading. I like the 3.8" screen and 480x800 resolution, so did not mind spending a bit more -- after all, it's going to be a money-making machine.

However, it seems I have run into a rather serious problem. I realise that MetaTrader 4 (Build 224) provides only the major currency pairs. This is a problem as I trade almost exclusively using the exotic currencies. MIG Investments has directed me to download the latest version from MetaQuotes, which turns out to be Build 224 as well. So the problem is still around.

Anybody knows what I can do to trade the following pairs on my HTC Touch HD: USDSEK, USDNOK, USDCHF, USDDKK, USDPLN, USDCZK, USDHUF?

Also, can a kind soul please show me how to display the MT4 chart in landscape mode? Do I need to download a third-party application?

Thanks!

Jack
