Trying to decide if TS is right for me.

Hi there. New to the forums and looking for some advice/confirmation on TS. I have used Qcharts for about 2 months and lets just say it is a less than stellar product. I am looking at TS as a replacement for RT charting. I have asked for feedback from TS directly but not gotten a response to see if it can do everything I want it to be able to do...

So let me start with a few screen shots:

http://i36.tinypic.com/2eogw0y.jpg
http://i34.tinypic.com/r1k9dk.jpg
http://i37.tinypic.com/nywd9w.jpg

The is how I use my qcharts setup most of the time and really need to know if TS can do all of this. Here are the indicators/options I would like to know if it can do. Also if there is any way someone could provide me a screen shot or 2 of these in TS that would be super...

CandleStick Charts
The indicators are:
MA(2,0)
MA(3,3)
MA(50,0)
MA(200,0)
BB(21,2,close)

Draw a few trendlines ;)

MACD(9,13,5)
Stochrsi(13,21(3),5)
Directional Movement (ADX)(3,13)

Notice the time periods on each chart:

Weekly
Dailt
233
55
34
21
8
5
1

Also charts with premarket information in there (the ones with 5,255 have the premarket in them)

The other things I look at is what is called a option montage. Basically it shows the options on a particular stock and the bid/ask info....

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

You can pretty well do everything you require and more. The attached screen prints are examples I just created in a few minutes on my live Tradestation. I cannot show you the option stuff in detail because I don't have that enabled on my account.

All the indicators used are standard and supplied with TS, but you can also copy and change them or create entirely new indicators and strategies. Oh I have just forgot that I didn't draw any trendlines. You can do this manually or use the supplied trendline indicator. There is also a community that creates loads of additional indicators and strategies.

As you see by the examples you can use any time periods and also included pre and post market sessions.

Everything is very flexible - colours, formats, alerts, customisable code etc, so apart from the options (that someone else will have to discuss with you) I think you will be able to reproduce what you have done before

Awesome. Thanks for the info. One thing that I wonder about is the Stoch RSI. I see you did Stoch Fast, but Stoch RSI is a little different.

Does TS have this built in?

Also the ADX you plotted is a little different from what I am used to, so trying to make sure I have this one as well:

Technical Analysis - ADX Directional Movement Index - Welles Wilder (ADX/DMI)

Thanks again for getting this info together....

As for reliability, etc. Is RT really RT, or are there lags during high volume? Any problems with data missing, etc?

The Stoch RSI does not seem to be in the list of standard ones supplied with the product, but as I said there is a very active forum that has built up thousands of indicators in a library and that is one of the indicators available there.

The DMi is available as standard

I have placed these on the attached picture, together with parabolic SAR and auto trendlines.

You can adjust any of these indicators to suit you by either altering the inputs or changing the underlying code or asking for help on the TS or this forum. The supplied indicators and most of those on the forum are not password-protected so you can easily see the logic behind them.

I haven't really had too many problems with RT, although it has frozen up a couple of times over the last week or 2. You could of course use other data feeds with Tradestation doing just the charting.

Again I have not had problems with missing data. Should there be any then the radar screen warns you with a symbol against any of the instruments where this may have occurred. There is a data correction menu that has options to correct data for specific symbols or all symbols, which when clicked will perform the correction automatically and the warning symbol disappears, so it seems farily robust

I think TS might be offereing a free month's trial at the moment, so you might be able to try before committing yourself

If you can think it then it can pretty much get coded into EL and then used on a chart. Not ever concept in the world can be used, but most can. I am one of those active forum members that Charlton mentions. I go by the tag name of _Nemo on that forum if you have any issues once coming over.

Thanks for the info. As for the free trial, looks like it is non-us only :( and I am in the US.... I would love to try this first hand and may just make the switch and see if I can get it to work. I am just tired of all the problems and lack of support from qcharts..

One last thing. Do either of you know what data service provider you get when ordering the software from tradestation??

This is definitely looking promising to me ;)

Thanks again!

Tradestation themselves are the data service provider and this is the service that I use.

I just signed up for a brokerage account there and it looks like they have a free 30day trial offer on TS once i fund my account. So just need to wait on the process now ;)

Good to know they use their own service and not esignal ;)

Thanks again!

Well I hope it all works out well for you - let us know how you get on. Make sure you have a good look around all the forums, support sites, webinars etc on their site - some only are available once funded.

You can however download some free manuals straight away on their programming language basics, function lists etc

One of my posts today shows the type of programming language they use if you wanted to create your own indicators, strategies etc

You may like to try this code for StochRSI. I notice you are just starting out with TS. Good luck. It's a labour of love but well worth it. The customer service is great but to get the real power of TS you will need to learn easy language.

{-------------StochRSI by Tushar Chande and Stanley Kroll ---------------}

Input: Len(14),Price(Close);
Vars: StochRSI(0),
rRSI(0),
RSIH(0),
RSIL(0);

rRSI = RSI(Price,Len);
RSIH = Highest(rRSI,Len);
RSIL = Lowest(rRSI,Len);
StochRSI = (rRSI -RSIL)/(RSIH - RSIL);

Plot1(StochRSI,"SRSI");
Plot2(.5,"Ml");
Plot3(.8,"UL");
Plot4(.2,"LL");

//BPV after an original concept by T. Chande and S.Kroll
// The New Technical Trader: Wiley 1994
//pp124-125

Actually this is the one I am using as it is exactly like Qcharts version ( which is what I wanted)..

Code:
inputs:
	RsiLength(13),
	StochLength(21), 	{ # of bars, periodK }
	KSmoothing(3), 		{ MA(periodK) }
	DSmoothing(5), 		{ MA(percentK) }
	OverBought(80),
	OverSold(20);

variables:
	MyRSI(0),
	MyStochRSI(0),
	oFastK(0),
	oFastD(0),
	oSlowK(0),
	oSlowD(0);

{ Calculate the RSI }
MyRSI = RSI(Close, RsiLength);
MyStochRSI = Stochastic(MyRSI, MyRSI, MyRSI, StochLength, KSmoothing,
	DSmoothing, 1, oFastK, oFastD, oSlowK, oSlowD);

{ Plot the lines }
Plot1(oSlowK, "PercentK");
Plot2(oSlowD, "PercentD");
Plot3(OverBought, "OverBought");
Plot4(OverSold, "OverSold");

By the way, tradestation is 1000% better than qcharts. glad I made the switch :)

Hi Dknc,
I really loved using the TS charts and they offer several training videos. However, be forewarned that their "live" customer support pertaining to questions about the charts completely suck! Be sure to test their trading platform for placing trades. For me it was very complex as one who has only traded the forex markets. Again, their customer support was virtually non-existent since TS required the guys/gals at the trading desk to assist you and that's the last thing they want to do is talk to you on how to use their platform! After several attempts at getting help it became evident to me that TS really is for the very experienced of traders with lots of money. It took them nearly a month to return my 25K and I had to re-send them my "three" faxed requests over each time. Good luck! I would never use them again even when I do become experienced!

Customer support from TS has always been pants for retail customers. Institutional accounts get a completely different and very efficient service. My suggestion , if you cannot open institutional account is to get an account manager and do everything through them.

Hi Dknc,
Just wondering how Tradestation is working out for you. I'm considering a monthly subscription. I live in Canada and I'm happy with the trading account I have here. One of my concerns is that they don't have data feeds for the Canadian exchanges.
