Looks very tasty - TradeStation better watch out!

New features include true portforlio testing and optimization, OCA order support, and some very nice thread/core allocation functions - 4 cores, 4 charts = 1 chart running on each core for maximum speed.

Specific question:
When you refer to portfolio testing, with this program can I test all Russell 2000 stocks as portfolio and get the combined performance?

Also, can I generate a historical price series of how many stocks closed
up versus down and plot that?

Yes, with MultiCharts you can do that.

It depends on how exactly you want the data generated. From what I know, eSignal provides the advanced-declined issues as a ready-made symbol in its symbol list

I've found MC to be a highly capable piece of software. In fact, I'm patiently waiting for a few key pieces of functionality before dropping TS altogether in favor of MC. Off the top of my head, the key missing feature for me is something similar to TradeManager in TS, a facility for viewing all open positions and orders for currently opened strats. Is it in there somewhere that I haven't looked?

Hi jj,

At this particular moment we are not quite sure if a window allowing to view all open positions is really all that necessary in MultiCharts. MultiCharts executes trades via TWS which already has such a window. So implementing it in MultiCharts as well would be duplicating the feature. But if we receive enough requests from our customers we will consider adding such a window.

Meanwhile, could you please tell us what you would need this feature for? For example TS's TradeManager does not show which strategy has generated a certain position. Would you like this or other additional information to be shown in MultiCharts?
 
Unless there's something I'm missing, there are some key pieces of information that are unavailable to me due to the lack of this functionality. In fact, besides a "data integrity chart" that allows me to quickly spot data issues Trademanager is the only TS window I look at during the day!

I run more than one market-system at a time (approximately 36, in fact, on any given day) and I need instant access to the following pieces of information:

1. Net hypothetical position for all strategies combined
2. Net hypothetical position for each strategy
3. Open strategy orders
4. A way to quickly identify which market-system generated which order (e.g. right-click, go to chart)
5. (Nice-to-have but not a must...) Open and closed P/L, both net and for each strategy.

I get the corresponding figures for my live accounts from my trading platform. I always need to ensure that the two match, and I cannot do this without TradeManager functionality. Sure, without it I can see what my real market position is, but how do I know when something has gone awry with the automation if I've got nothing to compare it to?

For reference, the tabs I use in the TS TradeManager are Strategy Positions and Strategy Orders. Without them, a system trader with more than one or two systems is effectively flying blind. The other tabs might as well not be there.

Everything you say makes a lot of sense. We are thinking about adding a functionality that would provide a centralized access to the data on orders/positions/trades. If you have more ideas on what such a monitor window should include please let me know.

Does anybody knows if you can run MultiCharts in multiple computer at the same time? Any issue with licensing, etc. I currently use tradestation and I am always running one computer in backtesting and another in real time trading and I do not have to pay anything extra. I specifically ask this after some mishaps with other software vendors.

I know you can load EL into multichars but is there any manipulations you need to do? Also my EL code relies in the EL Collection DLL. Can you use DLLs in multicharts the same way as TS?

Is there any limitation in the number of charts you can open at one time or data you can monitor?

I believe MC logs onto a license server every time you connect. The license permits installation on multiple computers, but you can only use one of the licenses at a time if you only bought one.

AFAIK, EL is fully supported, with the exception of a couple of reserved words. The supported EL words are documented on their site. ELcollections and ADE DLL's are both supported, as I use them myself. MC uses DLL's in the same way as TS.

No limitation on charts or data, MC is far more flexible than TS in respect to what you can plot.

Thanks for the info, it looks like TS has gotten real competition now. I am currently using the TS->NT->IB setup which it is being rock solid. Can anybody comment in the order manager that MC has for IB, Is this stable?
Does MC run in Vista x64? I really need meeeeemooooory.

I spoke to customer support and this is what the told me:
About running MC in more of one computer at the time, they said "I can run multiple instances in the same computer". This setup is not really good because I do not want to be backtesting in the same computer I am trading realtime.
About x64bit They told me "some users run on Vista x64" I take this for it runs but we do not support it.

There seems to be not much entusiasm for MC. Can somebody reply if using MC with Vista Ultimate x64 bit. Any issues there? I am specially interested in see if there is any memory limitations. How many charts with strategies have you been able to open? How backtesting compares to TS?
I forgot to ask about the datafeeds that you are using. Can you use TS datafeed while you are using TS at the same time. Can you list some pricing/quality for the datafeeds?

1. I'm very enthusiastic. great product, I use both TS and MC and MultiCharts wins hands-down.
2. no, I'm sticking with XP pro for now.
3. its compatible apparently, but you'd need to ask in the TSS support forums for more specific compatibility details.
4. none that i'm aware of.
5. more than your eyes could ever want to look at
6. backtesting is 100 times better than TS, the optimization routines are significantly more efficient. They've done some benchmarking on the speed difference. its surprising.
7. There is no centralized data source. Multicharts is compatible with many data sources such as esignal, IQfeed, tenfore, zenfire, as well as broker-driven feeds suchs as IB, TS, MB trading etc.
