Hi all

I am trying to create a portfolio of FTSE 100 stocks in sharescope for which ADX value is greater than 30 - anyone know how to do this ? i am running the gold version and the filter is only showing selection based on volume, macd, ris, stochastic and oving average.

cheers

Yes the filters you can data mine are as you have listed no more no less.

ADX or ADXR there is a difference.

Anyway, should be simple to do. Also depends what period ADX. There is a lag.

Hi kkarank,

I am not a Sharescope user (I use Metastock) although, for data reasons, I am thinking about buying it.
Wouldn’t it be possible to arrange your screen by columns where the indicators values are shown, by-passing the filters, and to copy your screen into a spreadsheet or Access database, and once there screen the results according to your criteria? Just an idea, though.

kkarank,
Being a simpleton, I took the direct approach:
1. Click on FTSE 100 icon
2. Click on the 'Show Graph' icon
3. Right click and go to 'Add Indicator'; adjust the settings accordingly
4. Scroll through the charts and manually check according to your criteria
Total time taken: about 3 minutes! The added benefit is that you get to see what is happening in the index as a whole, as opposed to just one segment of it. If you want to filter all listed stocks, then I can see that a filter would be useful. But, if you're only interested in the FTSE 100, then I recommend the approach I've outlined.
Tim.

Sorry

I think timsk is right, but I'd swear that I'd read somewhere in the Sharescope website that the spreadsheet bit could be done!
Sorry!

Sorry, me again, kkarank; I agree with timsk, but it is posible to export data to excel. Have a llok at page 77 of the user guide.
As I sais, I am a Metastock user with some interets in Sharescope; I tend to use spreadsheets a lot in conjunction with MS.
I hope this is useful to you.

Eduardo

Tim,

I am not sure that is what i am looking for .I do only swing trading and have been putting money on stocks that are 1) trending up and 2) have an RSI value of just under 70.I could put a criterion for the RSI value but then had to go to each stock chart to see which one is trending( ADX > 30) .I thought with this sophisticated software it would have been possible to do that through a custom filter.

Of course they have an option for MACD instead of ADX and i could have used that but just that i find ADX to be more accurate.I have tried to use this simple approach in 4 trades so far and they have all given me profit.Saves me from wasting time on ranging stocks.

Thanks,
kk

Ed

i cannt see how putting data in excel is going to give me a filter based on ADX (unless of course i write my owm macros) .Surely there should have been some extension in sharescope that allowed you to choose filters based on your own favourite criteria rather than provide just them 5 ??They have good filters when it comes to selecting stocks based on fundamental analysis but if someone wants to cut the chase and filter them based on technical indicators he/she doesnt have much choice.

kk

kkarank,
not sure if this will help, but in the next release of ShareScope (next few weeks) you will also be able to data mine for swing chart patterns (e.g. upswing/downswing). Would this satisfy the other part of your filter?

You are right, and that is the very reason why I chose MS over Sharescope - I trade mainly FTSE100 equities ( in the form of spreadbets/CFDs) and, quite frankly, they are so well covered by City analysts that I don't look much at the fundamentals - they already do it for me.
But Sharescope choice is so restricted in technical filters, that I had no choice but to purchase MS; which is a shame, because Sharescope has got so much more potential...for example, they could be the first ones in UK to implement a backtesting software based on technicals AND fundamentals...But of course, I shall expect tonnes of counter arguments against that!
You know, if it ain't broken, don't fix it!

hi,sorry but i take it you are from Sharescope marketing ?(sorry if i got this one wrong)

yes sure it would be good to have the swing patterns but i guess the biggest weekness of sharescope for me so far has been inability to do data mining and filtering based on technical indicator of choice !by the way i am an IT consultant and design trading software for a living for large corporates and know a thing or two about how simple this can be !!give it a thought if you can - other than that i think there is almost everything that you can ask for in this product

Ed,i would never for my sins rely solely on analysis of city experts !!

i have seen a few instances where folks have gone wrong BIG TIME - i use my analysis FIRST and then look around for comfirmation of my approach in columns(investorchronicle, sharecrazy,FT etc.)

it is an absolute must for me to be able to filter based on any indicator i want - after all if all i want is data based on fundamental analysis - it is available for free !! if i just want streaming charts i can go to someone like advfn.com and pay tenth of what i pay sharescope

hows metatrader anyway ? does it let you do filtering based on a larger library of technical indicators ?

cheers

Has anyone used the new Sharescope software yet with the new features :

Automatic candlestick pattern recognition, Data mining on candlestick patterns etc. etc.

I received a T2W advert yesterday regarding this and it does sound interesting.

Anybody got any comments ??

Hi yacarob1,
I saw that ad' and thought, like you, that it looked interesting - especially as I subscribe to Sharescope and hadn't realised such options were available. Upon investigation, it turns out that the latest version isn't out yet but it's due to be released in the next few days.

By far the most powerful scanning of any of these programmes is Updata. It has tick box scanning on all technical indicators even point and figure patterns with risk reward ratios. You can also write code for any other scan you want to do. I havent found anything it can't do. ADX is easy.

.........Powerful.....so does it go 0 to 60 in 20 secs...??.....

On a serious note for any good TA package, it must have it's own programming language......this gives user more flexibility to create better scans / exploration etc....

I think this kind of loose statement like ......'by far most powerful scanning of these programmes blah blah blah'....without any benchmark comparative figues is just hearsay......
