R programming for testing

Does anyone have experience in using R for testing purposes?
Does it take a lot of time & effort to become proficient in R if one already has a reasonable competency with Excel?

At present I am doing my large-scale backtesting in Excel, but I am starting to push the boundaries in terms of processing power/speed. A friend recently gave me a quick intro to R.
