MetaTrader 4 (MT4) 'How do I ...' / Q & A Thread

I realise there are zillions of threads already on MT4 - and that's half the problem! Both here and on the wider net, there is just soooooo much info about this platform that, paradoxically, it's hard to get some basic questions answered. So, I thought it might be an idea to have a house thread where members who can ask 'how do I . . .' type questions. With that in mind, here's mine . . .

1. On the ETX demo version of MT4 that I'm using, the time zone is set to GMT+2. Can I change this? I was expecting it to be set to Central European Time (GMT+1), but the extra 2 hours is both strange and annoying.

2. How do I change the default settings for the tools? For example, if I want to insert an 'up arrow' (to indicate a long trade), the default colour is red. Can I change this to green?

Thanks in advance.
Tim.

. . . Bumpity bump!

Hmm, 70 views and no replies. Okay, well, here's another question for all you MT4 users out there . . .

MT4_Trading_Tab.png

The image above is the pop up box I get when right clicking on a chart. If I want to place a quick order, I then hover the cursor over 'Trading' and the secondary smaller box appears. As you can see, the default options offers one limit order and one stop order. In addition to these, does anyone know if it's possible to have all four orders (buy & sell limit and buy & sell stop) to this box?
Tim.

PS. I've sorted this one - so only posts #1 and #3 are outstanding.

Okay, one more question and, if I get no reply to that, I'll knock this thread on the bonce. I want to set up an alert in MT4, but not to a specific price level. I want the alert to sound when price touches a moving average or trend line. I'm sure it must be possible, but I can't find any instruction anywhere on how to do it. Thoughts anyone?
Tim.

Haha morning Tim !!!

:LOL::LOL::LOL:

I'd try and help but have never used MT4 I'm afraid so might be able to contribute, but probably nothing you could do anything with. :)

Funny no one is answering as I think it's a great idea for a thread and in the best interest of everyone who has MT4, you can always use a helping hand where software is concerned.

I think I've more or less got to grips with the basics of MT4 now - although I am struggling with one particular problem . . .

Templates
I've created a Heikin-Ashi template, specifying the thickness of the candle and the colour. When I open a new chart and click on the template, it always defaults to a thicker candle style than the one I specified and to bright, garish colours. More annoyingly, just switching between profiles or timeframes even, will result in the same thing. To correct it, I have to go into properties and manually change the settings - which is a right pain. If anyone can solve this conundrum for me I'd be so grateful - as it's really doing my little swede in!

Thanks in advance,
Tim.

I expect other MT4 users have similar problems Tim, so why don't you post in any answers you have found ?

Wish I could help

Keep thread going please

Hi Pat,
I've half solved my latest problem - there were two sets of colour settings that needed changing and I only changed the ones under the 'Colour' tab. However, the settings under the 'Inputs' tab must also be changed as well - which I failed to do (see pic', below). However, I still can't change the default setting for the thickness of the candle, so I either live with a thicker appearance or manually change it to the one I prefer - as shown below.

. . . Seem to have the same problem changing defaults. . .
Hi Dick,
Does the above explanation help at all? If not, can you give more details about what it is that you want to achieve?
Tim.

If anyone could point me in the direction of a profitable Expert Advisor I would be grateful.

Do you mean one of those EAs that makes you silly money every day while you relax by the pool drinking pina colada's Pat? If so, there's loads of them all over the net!

Hi Tim, Yes that has worked fine, I was trying to change the default colours but have now just saved as a new template.

Cheers :)

Hey that's the one !

Change your indicator however you like it. To change candle thickness right click on the chart and select zoom in or zoom out. Then save the chart under templates as "default". Now, any new chart you open will open with the default indicator. You can save the template as whatever name you want but only the default one will open up automatically.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the input - but still no joy I'm afraid. Probably me doing / not doing something obvious - but not to me. It's only a detail - I'm not at all worried about it as the difference is purely aesthetic and I don't use Heikin Ashi charts a great deal anyway.

Thanks again,
Tim.

I have a MT4 question too!

I have the habit of putting the trade history arrows onto my charts. So I drag from 'account history' in Terminal, onto the chart. With every arrow, I then click on it to change the colour, style, and the visualization (to 1M and 5M only). Is there a way to set a default setting for these arrows so that i can reduce the time it takes to document these trades?

Many thanks in advance.

A trading friend of mine, who is a bit of an MT4 expert, claims that it's not possible to change the default setting for the trade history errors. Bummer!

Thanks guys for the above indies I will have a look,
However last week I went beserk and bought 2 indicators from the MT4 page and guess what they combine to make a profitable one.
They are The Strength Meter and Breakout Analyser. Both are for sale at $88 and no It is not me selling etc.
