New Version of Windows

I've just been reading on a general news site about new technology for 2006, and number 1 was a new release of Windows - called Windows Vista.

It seems to enable you to play multiple games in 3D, but more relevant to our purposes it promises to have stronger security and prevent hacking etc. I suppose it's more important for those of us who are short term/day traders as opposed to those who log in for 20 minutes a day, place their orders, and then manage to have a meaningful life outside of trading!!!

Does anyone on here know any more about it?

Does anyone intend to upgrade to it from XP from day 1?

I normally wait for 6 months after the initial release until all the bugs and corresponding fixes are bedded in before upgrading. My general view is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I'm sure that some time later Microsoft will withdraw support for XP, although from my point of view it seems to be extremely stable anyway.

I've also noticed a few on this site have shunned Microsoft for Linux instead, and seem generally to be happy with their choice. Unfortunately, I'm not technically confident or competent enough to try such a change.

What's the general consensus from all you techies out there?

There isn't any such thing as a life outside of trading.. that is boring rubbish

Wouldn't touch it with the proverbial bargepole......

Most things Microsoft are rarely worth even contemplating until the second service pack is released. I had been contemplating moving to XP 64 from Windows 2000 but when MS can't even be arsed making sure their own products work with it, the chances of anything else running smoothly seem somewhat limited.

I'll be too old to care by the time support for XP gets withdrawn I would think........

I am informed that, allegedly, Microsoft actually rely on new users as a way of debugging the new software from all the feedback and complaints that they get. This would confirm that it is utterly pointless being an early adopter of their software.

NUMBER 1 RULE OF COMPUTERS

If your system is working fine as it, upgrade your operating system at your PERIL.

Unless of course you're using Win98 then you must upgrade because that's 8 years ago!

Vista looks like being more of a marketing exercise than anything else and yes the best plan is to wait for SP1. That therefore means you shouldn't upgrade for at least 2-3 years from now. You can bet that Vista will be rushed into service (it's already well behind schedule) and for many people will be a nightmare.

I have still got a computer that uses win95 and I won't upgrade it cos the program I use it for can't use anything else.. and why should I buy another program and do lots more work to upgrade for no real benefit

and before anyone suggest.. no it won't run on xp if I change the settings to 'fool it', or win 2000 either

Shame on you. Have you guys given any thought to poor old Mr Gates and his needs in all this?

As others have said, Vista in its infancy - like the early versions of XP - will no doubt be unstable. However, I'll no doubt get a copy and run it on a non-critical PC that I have, but that's just because I am a total ooh-new-software-must-have-geek :D.

XP, properly patched, is now a stable tool imo.

However, I actually have quite a lot of time for Mr. Gates and Allen - yes, they earn bucketloads of money - more than you could spend in a lifetime - but Bill Gates in particular gives huge donations to charities, and Paul Allen I believe is involved with funding the Virgin space-flight proposal (although like Vista, I think I'd wait for the first few 'virgins' to test it out before realising any Neil Armstrong-esque ambitions)
