EOD scanning

Hello,

Can anyone help?

I would like to be able to scan (automatically)the daily and weekly prices of a large number of shares and have the software come up with a list of those that meet certain criteria - such as, ADX above 30. I would then like to be able to shift those shares easily into a separate folder, and then scan (manually) through the charts of those shares, looking at each one in turn, disgarding those I don't like the look of, until I'm left with a selected few.

I'm having problems doing this with Supercharts. Chartscanner keeps giving false readings, and I don't seem to be able to shift shares from the search result into a separate folder, or edit those in the 'results' folder.

I've tried Metastock. I run Explorer, but I can't figure out how to move all the shares that it returns into a separate folder that I can then scan quickly and edit while I'm doing so. Metastock, too, is giving false results.

With both Supercharts and Metastock, I use much the same formula, which is ADX(14)>30. However, in both cases, shares are being returned with ADX readings of well below 30, although the results claim more. The claimed results and the charts don't tally at all. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I've heard Amibroker is good for scanning and I've downloaded the trial version but I'm disheartened at the prospect of another 500+page manual to work through so haven't tried it yet!

I don't feel that what I'm trying to do is that complicated. Maybe I'm missing something obvious. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Nick,

TradeStation 8 has 'Radar Scan' , There's VectorVest Prographics, and AIQ and another interesting option might be MT Predictor ( scans 52% profitable) - You can use all sorts of indicators in radar scan and its linked to charts. don't know if thats any help

When you view the results of the exploration there is a button "Save List". This will save the securities that have "passed" to one of your favourites folders.

Could be a lot of things. Having sufficient bars loaded and ensuring that the filter column is correctly coded are two possibles.

Good luck.

...as above and also...

In Metastock when scanning you must allow for at least 500 periods or more and not use default setting....

You can run many explorations, for any number of folders and save all exploration results in a separate directory for charting....

Thanks, everyone.

The solution seems to have been been changing the 'Load Minimum Records' default in the Explorer options.

And copying the Explorer results to Favourites is the other answer!

One further question: when manually scanning through the shares saved into Favourites, is there any obvious reason why some show up as weekly and others daily? I should add the initial Exploration scan was designated Weekly. Is this the individual share's SmartChart template asserting itself?.

Cheers,

Nick

...short answer...yes....

I don't use smart charts.....but layouts that contains many templates....easily 'flipped' through by prressing <ctrl> and <tab>....

check the settings in chart and test the various settings that are avilable for use....

Periodicity

as far as I can tell securities saved from Exploration take the periodicity used in the exploration. On opening any of them should should be able to change to to daily if you want.

Zambuck,

I'll look into that. As someone used to Supercharts, where only a limited number of shares could fit into a workspace, I assumed it would be the same with Metastock layouts. Is there a size limit?

gcb01,

What seems to be happening is that each share in Favourites saved from an Exploration comes through in chart form with whatever periodicity and indicators and colours it had when last viewed, in isolation.

I remember reading somewhere it took months to get up to speed with Metastock ... I also keep reading of people giving up and moving to Amibroker!

No there isn't an apparent limit...I open upto 8 charts using one icon containing 'layouts'...they all 'fit' in a cascade or stacked up and you can shift through all as discussed before....

Yes it takes long time to get set with MS but it pays.......I tried to use Amobroker as I had heard a lot about it...and ditched it within few days as it did not match in any way with MS..!!...I think it appeals to many because of freebee data from yahoo...but then one can do that with MS as well....if they trust the yahoo data...
